Overview: The Nanjiang Martyrs’ Cemetery, located in Xichou County, Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, was established in February 1984 and covers an area of 35 acres.
Historical Development:
- February 1984: Construction of the Nanjiang Martyrs’ Cemetery began.
Martyrs Buried: The cemetery honors 229 revolutionary martyrs who sacrificed their lives in various conflicts, including the Anti-Japanese War, the Liberation War, the “Two Mountains” War, and in defense of socialist modernization. The breakdown is as follows:
- 68 Martyrs: Border guerrilla fighters who died during the Anti-Japanese War and the early years of the Liberation War.
- 157 Martyrs: Heroes who sacrificed their lives in the mid-1980s during the “Two Mountains” battles to safeguard national borders and territorial integrity.
- 4 Martyrs: Revolutionary martyrs who died defending socialist modernization, including:
- 1 martyr recognized on October 24, 1997, by the Kunming Public Security Bureau as a “Courageous Warrior.”
- 1 martyr honored on October 7, 2005, for sacrificing his life while rescuing people from drowning at the Hekou Sino-Vietnamese Railway Bridge, approved by the Ministry of Public Security.
- 1 martyr honored on April 1, 2008, who was killed while mediating a dispute in Houwan Village, recognized as a revolutionary martyr by the Yunnan Provincial Government.
- 1 martyr who died during the construction of the Lanzhou Tunnel in February 1978.
Among the buried martyrs, there is 1 combat hero honored by the Central Military Commission, 3 combat heroes recognized by the military region, 12 first-class merit awardees, 29 second-class merit awardees, 82 third-class merit awardees, and 80 Party members. The distribution includes 99 from outside the province, 66 from within the province, and 62 from the county.
Protective Measures:
- September 2000: Designated as a patriotic education base in Wenshan Prefecture.
- June 2010: Recognized as a provincial patriotic education base in Yunnan.
- November 2022: Approved as a second batch provincial-level martyr memorial facility.
