The Stone Forest (Shilin 石林), one of Yunnan’s most popular tourist attractions is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, about 90 kilometers southeast of Kunming, in Yunnan Province, China.  It’s renowned for its striking Karst landscape, featuring towering limestone formations that resemble petrified trees, creating a “forest” made of stone, also rich in local culture. It is home to the Yi ethnic group, whose legends and folklore are deeply intertwined with the landscape. The site offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural history, and opportunities for hiking and exploration. Stone forest offers you a surreal, otherworldly experience, with stunning views and a glimpse into the region’s cultural heritage.

Day 1 Kunming-Stone Forest-Kunming

Sightseeing and Activities: Stone forest

Morning: After enjoying the breakfast in Kunming, your day will begin with a transfer from Kunming to Stone Forest Scenic Area.

Exploration:The Stone Forest is primarily divided into two main areas: Da Shilin (Major Stone Forest), the more popular section with expansive rock formations, and the Naigu Shilin (Minor Stone Forest), which is quieter and offers a more secluded experience. Visitors can explore these areas by foot, following trails that take them through narrow passages, around jagged peaks, and up to scenic viewpoints that offer sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.

Afternoon: Return Back to Kunming

•  In the late afternoon, drive back to Kunming

• Protecting oneself from altitude sickness. Lessen the effects of altitude sickness, avoid strenuous exercise and have plenty of rest.
• Respect local customs , habits, and religious beliefs.
• Situated on the northern edge of the tropical zone, Xishuangbanna area is hot, humid and rainy; don’t forget to take an umbrella or a raincoat when go out.
• When take photos, please pay attention to your safety, do not shoot in dangerous areas.

I am from Italy and I really like Puer Tea and Dianhong Black Tea from Yunnan. It was a dream for me arrange tea culture trip to Southwest Yunnan where I can enjoy the real tea culture life with local ethnic people. I found Yunnan Exploration Travel from Google, a nice Yunnan tea culture tour was arranged by my travel consultant whose name is Cindy Cao. I traveled from Kunming to Dali by high speed train, visit Xiaguan Tuocha Factory.

I really appreciate Charlie Lee who is the boss of Yunnan Exploration as well as our driver and guide this time. He traveled with us in the whole trip. From Dali ,we drove to Xiaowan Town of Fengqing County, we paid a visit to Jinxiu Ancient Tea which is more than 3200 years old and it is praised as the Ancestor of Tea in the world. We visited Dianhong Black Tea factory and Xiashan organic tea mountain in Fengqing County. From Fengqing County, we drove to lincang, visited most famous Dongbanshan and Xibanshan tea moutnains in Mengku Town of Shuangjiang County. Here we tasted the aged Puer tea and learnt how to make the Puer tea cake. It was a long day driving from Lincang to Puer city via Jinggu County, but we really enjoyed the fantastic tropical scenery in Southwest Yunnan. We finished our trip in Puer City and came back to Italy. Yunnan Exploration Travel arrange Yunnan tea culture travel very professionally, they are so familiar with local tea and ethnic culture.

Meals – the food was good and the the variety of dishes very wide. There was more food than we could finish every time 🙂 We liked the chance to try the local dishes, and every meal that you catered for gave us this opportunity.
