Why is the Monument of Margary Affair So Special
After the Opium War, British imperialism expanded the scope of the colony, opened up the Burma channel, opened the southwestern gateway of China, and sent the colonel, Bailang with nearly 200 people to attempt to invade the Yunnan Borer in the 13th year of the Qing Dynasty (1874). The British Embassy in China sent a translator Augustus Margary to provide the necessary assistance from Yingjiang. In February of the first year of Guangxu (1875), Bailang and Margary led the troops from Myanmar and invaded Yingjiang County. On February 21, in the face of the people of all ethnic groups who came to block, Margary first shot and killed one person, causing the people to be filled with indignation and rebellion against Bailang and Margary, who abandoned the four people including Margary into Songhe River and expelled the troop from the border.
After the event, the corrupt and incompetent Qing government succumbed to foreigners, brutally encircled and suppressed the patriotic people who defended the borders of the motherland, arrested and slaughter these people, and signed the Sino-British Yantai Treaty with the British government in the second year of Guangxu (1876). However, the feat of the Dehong people to fight against the aggressors will last forever. In 1987, the Yingjiang County People’s Government established a monument to commemorate the anti-British struggle between the military and civilians in the border areas.
