Gao Tai acrobatics, also known as “Tonghai Gao Tai,” is a distinctive traditional folk performance with a history of over 400 years. Originating from the Jiangnan region, it has been passed down through generations and is deeply rooted in the local culture of Tonghai County. This art form integrates various traditional crafts, including painting, sculpture, bamboo weaving, and ironwork, creating a visually stunning and technically challenging performance.

Inheritance and Mentorship

Gongsun Hui (公孙辉) is a distinguished inheritor of this art form. He has been trained by Gongsun Xin (公孙馨), a master craftsman and provincial-level inheritor of Gao Tai paper扎 (paper craft) skills. Under Gongsun Xin’s guidance, Gongsun Hui (公孙辉) has honed his skills in Gao Tai design, assembly, and performance. He has become proficient in creating intricate and delicate Gao Tai structures, which are a hallmark of this art form.

He has led the Qijie Gao Tai troupe in numerous performances, including the Tonghai County Spring Festival parade and the China Folk Art Festival. This award reflected his outstanding achievements in the creation of elevated platform art and showcased the unique charm of Tonghai (通海) elevated platform performances.

In 2008, the program “Xu Xian Borrows the Umbrella” (《许仙借伞》), which Gongsun Hui (公孙辉) helped create, won the Silver Award at the Chinese Folk Piaose (飘色) Art Exhibition.
