Why is Lijiang Ancient Town So Special?

The beauty of the Old City is also due to the integrity of geographical nature and harmony. In 30 km northwest to the Old City lies the unconquerable Yulong Snow Mountain of 5,596 m and the relics of glacier in the Quaternary Period. The spring is divided into three branches to flow into the Old City relatively from east, middle and west. The countless small branches are threading among the stone-paved lanes, just as the poem describes “spring crossing around each household forms a poem while flying willow before every household draws a painting”. Many architects give highly praise for it and it has gained such a beautiful name as “Suzhou in Highland” and “Eastern Venice”. A great number of travelers are attracted by the beauty and charm of the Old City and the Snow Mountain, keeping pouring and lingering on their primitive simplicity and quietness. And, now, the Lijiang Old City is being reported as one of China Historical Cultural Cities in the whole world’s cultural heritages. Thus, as a bright pearl of our country, it will be more splendid.

History & Culture

Mu Palace in Lijiang Anceint Town

The Old City was firstly built at the very beginning of Yuan Dynasty when the first emperor of Yuan Dynasty, Hu Bilei led his army to be on a southern expedition to Dali and reached Lijiang crossing the Jingsha Rive by the leather bags. And the Old City with a long history of eight or night hundred years can be traced back to South Song Dynasty when it had a certain scale. Since Ming Dynasty, the Old City has been named “Da Yan Xiang” because it is located at the center of Lijiang plain, surrounded by green mountains and threaded with the green rivers, just like a jasper ink slab.

Ruled by Mu Ancestors:

In 1254, Mu ancestors in Lijiang area submitted to the leadership of Hu Bilei, the first emperor of Yuan Dynasty. Then it set up San Dan Administrative official under the submission of Cha Han Zhang administrative official. In 1276, it was switched to Lijiang Administrative Prefecture. In 1382, it set up Lijiang Military Prefecture when the former magistrate of the prefecture Ajia Ade was granted the surname as Mu and the rank as the magistrate of the prefecture of Ming Dynasty in hereditary system by the first emperor of Ming Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang. The Old City of Lijiang and the buildings of Military prefecture (The buildings of Mu ancestors) are a symbol of politics, economy and power of the Mu’s family with a distinctive style and imposing manner. The famous traveler in Ming Dynasty, Xu Xiake ever recorded it as “The magnificence of the palace can be compared with the emperor”, and “the people’s residence is scaled closely side by side” when he was passing here, which just truly reflects the prosperity and splendor of the Old City.

What are the features of Lijiang Ancient Town?

An Old Town without Wall:

When visitors walk into Lijiang Old Town, they may find that there is no city wall around it. The reason is related to an interesting story. Lijiang had been ruled by the Hereditary Mu family for more than 500 years. The Chinese character “Mu”(represents the governor of Lijiang) is put into a frame(represents the city wall), “Mu” may change to the character “Kun” that meas “siege” or “predicament”. For a fear that the governor Mu family would be trapped into predicament, the old town never has a city wall.

Lijiang Anceint Town

Architectural Style:

The building history of the Lijiang nationality has experienced from the ancient residence in caves, trees and wood plates houses with courtyard to its own residence model as “three houses with one screen hall facing the gate” and “quadrangle and quin-courtyard with lofts”. The plain of the residence is characterized as the combination of central courtyard and inwards houses. The outer railings (Xia Zi) is also a main part of the residence.

Naxi Nationality & Dongba Culture:

The Naxi nationality keeps absorbing from the outer culture. Lijiang located at the southern Silk Road and the road of tea and horse trade, is the trade distributing center of Yunnan and Xizang province in ancient times. The culture is continuously influenced by the outer factors ranging from inner land culture such as Buddhism, Taoism since the Hu Bilei military forces stationing in 1253 to the later Christianism at the beginning of the 20th century. The culture, while absorbing others, improves itself with its original Dongba Church, Dongba sutra, Dongba pictograph, Dongba paintings and the ancient music known as the heritages from Yuan Dynasty. In the way of incorporating everything of different nature, the Naxi culture really enriches the mystery and connotation of the Lijiang Old City.

About Baisha Old Town:

The Baisha Ancient Village is one of the oldest towns in Lijiang City. It got its name “Baisha” meaning “white sand” from the natural white sand in the area. It was the cradle-land of the Tusi Dynasty evolved from the Mu Clan. It was also the earliest settlement of the Naxi people. There are many ancient constructions built in the Ming Dynasty: the Dabaoji Palace, the Liuli Temple and the Wenchang Palace. The well-known Baisha Frescoes are situated in the Dabaoji Palace.

The architectural complex is made of two parts, the folk residence and the cultural sites. The folk residence is called “Peng Shi Zhi” in local language meaning the “White Sand Streets”. All the streets were constructed oriented from north to south. In town center, there is a square at where three avenues intersect. Houses and small stores line up on both sides of the streets. A crystal-clear brook flows around all houses passing the small town from north to south.

As mentioned the Baisha Ancient Town was the cradle of Mu clan. The Mu family was famous for their city planning skills and experience. Early in the Tang Dynasty, once the emperor of the Nanzhao State named the Yulong Snow Mountain “North-Yue”, the ancestors of Mu clan began to construct Baisha Streets and North-Yue Temple in Baisha Ancient Town. These constructions had witnessed the golden age of the Baisha Ancient Town. In the Song Dynasty this town prospered further and became the economic, political and cultural center of the Lijiang City.

History of Baisha Old Town

Baisha Old Town is the first settlement of Naxi People when they came into Lijiang basin and also the cultural origin, and it is the political center of Lijiang before Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368 A.D.). In the early Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 A.D.), the government in Baisha Old Town built many temples, for example the Liuli Temple, Dabaoji Palace and etc, and thus it was also the religion center of Lijiang in that time. Nowadays, many foreigners are very interested in the Chinese culture and the primitive environment that still kept in Baisha Old Town.

Where is Baisha Old Town

On the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Baisha Old Town was located in 10 kilometers north of Lijiang Old Town with Dragon Spring to the south and Zhishan Mountain to the west.

Main Attractions in Baisha Old Town

Later in the Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty the Mu family migrated to the Dayan town gradually. The central district of the town is characterized by clusters of temples called “Mudu” and a huge square symbolizing the political power and influence of Mu family at the time. Among the remaining ancient architectures, the Fuguo Temple, the Dabaoji Palace, the Liuli Palace and the Dading Pavilion were built during the reign of Tusi offspring of the Mu clan. In the meantime, the Mu people began to channel water from the Yulong Snow Mountain into the town for irrigation and water supply which could be the one of the earliest irrigation engineering works.

Liuli Temple(琉璃殿) & Dabaoji Palace(大宝积宫)

Dabaoji Palace in Baisha Old Town, Lijiang

At the end of Baisha Old Street, there is a huge cluster of temples built in the Yongle Period of the Ming Dynasty. It consists of three yards: the Sutra Collection Pavilion that is the dooryard, the Liuli Temple that is the cloister and the Dabaoji Palace that is the backyard. The palace occupies an area of about 73 square meters. Among the 28 fresco groups in the palace, the painting about the Sakyamuni explaining the sutra passages to his disciples is the most famous and valuable one.

These mural paintings of more than 100 statues and tales, with their fine line, smooth carvings, rich colors, vivid pattern and harmonious composition amazingly lively presented religious tales and activities of Taoism, Buddhism and Tibetan Buddhism. They are valuable treasures of Chinese painting history and cultural heritage. The frescos were created by Han artists in collaboration with Tibetan artists; they thoroughly demonstrated superb artistic skills and creativity.

Dading Pavillion(大定阁)

The Dading Pavilion, about 10 meters away from the Dabaoji Palace, is dated back to the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty (1572 AD). The 16 well-preserved mural paintings in the Dading Pavilion were created in the Qing Dynasty. Compared to those in the Dabaoji Palace, these paintings have beautiful shapes, bright color and precise lines creating strong visual impacts and sensation. It is also valuable national treasure and cultural inheritance.

Dadingge Pavillion in Baisha Old Town, Lijiang

Baisha Frescos(白沙壁画)

The 44 pieces of Baisha frescos were carved in the early Ming Dynasty. Most of the paintings depict religious stories of Taoism, Buddhism and Tibetan Buddhism. The mural embodies the artistic characteristics of Naxi, Tibetan, Han and Bai ethnic groups. Among them the paintings of Kwan-yin and Sakyamuni are the most famous ones. Now Baisha Frescos, also known as Lijing Frescos have become precious data for studying history of Chinese arts and religions.

Life of Naxi People

Wandering around the Baisha Village, you can enjoy the slow lifestyle of the Naxi People and their friendly smiling faces; see happy and satisfied travelers as well as better scenery than that of Lijiang. Heading for this village, the Baisha Murals cannot be missed. These Murals are representative of Lijiang Murals and their creation took about three hundred years, from the early Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1911). The paintings were finished by Han, Tibetan and Naxi painters as well as painters from other nationalities, so they are not a symbol of Naxi Culture but a fusion of art from different nationalities. The peak of the Lijiang Murals was at end of the Ming Dynasty. Now only 55 pieces of murals are preserved in religious sites around Lijiang Town.

Dabaoji Palace

Most of the existing murals are preserved in Dabaoji Palace, a temple built in 1582. Twelve pieces of murals with 167 different figures are painted on the wall with religion as their main theme. The figures of Buddha, the Four Heavenly Kings as well as daily life scenes, plants and animals are included and reflect the combination of several religions and different cultures. The Liuli Palace contains 16 pieces of murals, mainly with figures from Buddhism.

……

If you are interested in the Buddhist culture, especially Tibetan Buddhism, Fuguo Temple ruins can be included in the itinerary. Baisha Village keeps the Fuguo Temple ruins although the temple is now located in the Black Dragon Pool Park in Lijiang for the convenience of visitors. History of Shuhe Old Town

Shuhe was built along the mountainside and faces the river. There are two rivers on each side of it that go through the whole, village. Channels were dug so that the water would pass by each house. Rivers, channels and roads make a dense web and link the town in a tight structure just like a honeycomb. People use stones in the nearby mountains to make the walls of their houses. Compared to those in the ancient old town, the houses here are even more natural. Right in the middle of Shuhe, there is a square market, which is called Shuhe Square Market. Observing closely, you will find that the one in the old town was built totally according to this one. Walking in Shuhe, you will have the feeling that this ancient town of Shuhe is the model of the Old Town while the Old Town is tension and development of Shuhe.

Shuhe is also called Town of Springs. About one hundred meters north of the Shuhe Square Market, there is the waterhead of the streams here. It is “Jiuding Dragon Pool”. The water is clean and transparent; the fountains spurt out day and night. The Naxi hold the spring as holy. Beside it, people built a Longquan Temple (Dragon Spring Temple) to enshrine and worship the founder of cobbler handicraft.

Among the countless old stone bridges in Lijiang, it is regarded as ‘the First’. The deck has been pock-marked over hundreds of years, revealing the solemn passing of history.

Long Pool (Dragon Pool)

There is a deep pool at the end of the street, called Long Pool (Dragon Pool), from which the overflowing water winds through the village, and the bubbling sound can be heard miles away. Fishes in the pool are appreciated by every tourist, because they are close to people. When you throw food to them, they will fight each other for it. Beside the pool lies a broken stele.
