Baohai Park in Kunming
Baohai Park (宝海公园) is located in the eastern city area of Kunming (昆明), covering an area of 250 acres. It is the largest urban park in Kunming and was officially opened to the public in December 1999. The park features winter cherry blossoms (冬樱花) and evergreen lawns, complemented by plants such as camphor trees (香樟) and azaleas (杜鹃).
Functions and Safety Features
Baohai Park serves not only as a leisure and entertainment venue for residents but also plays an important role as an emergency shelter. The Kunming Municipal Government (昆明市人民政府) has approved the establishment of emergency shelters within the park to respond to sudden public emergencies such as earthquakes, fires, gas leaks, and explosions. The emergency facilities include:
- Emergency water wells (应急水井)
- Emergency toilets (应急厕所)
- Emergency supplies storage stations (应急物资储备站)
- Emergency command systems (应急指挥系统)
- Emergency power supply systems (应急供电系统)
- Emergency helipads (应急停机坪)
- Emergency medical stations (应急医疗救护站)
- Emergency waste disposal stations (应急垃圾站)
- Emergency signage (应急标志牌)
The emergency shelters at Baohai Park are permanent facilities that do not alter the park’s recreational, entertainment, and fitness functions during normal times. They will only be activated during major emergencies to ensure residents’ safety. The park is well-equipped with facilities, including parking lots and snack streets.
Park Features
The park has a green area ratio of 61.3%, with large areas dedicated to winter cherry blossoms and evergreen lawns. It makes extensive use of local plants like camphor trees and azaleas, creating a lush green environment characterized by the concept of “a continuous spring with blossoms throughout the year” (花枝不断四时春). Historically, Baohai Park was known as Wang Baohai (王宝海), a picturesque body of water in the southern part of Kunming. As the city developed, this area became a low-lying depression and a fish pond, with the city’s sewage flowing through the middle.
In the northeastern corner of the park, a polluted sewage river has been covered and transformed into a garden area for planting flowers. To the northwest, there is a complex of elevated roads along the main transit route, which features a secondary park entrance and a go-kart racing track, as well as a children’s playground equipped with swings, sand pits, and shallow water pools. The eastern part of the park leads to Wanxing Garden (万兴花园), which includes a wedding photography base (婚纱摄影基地) and a yacht dock (游艇码头). To the east of the park’s main entrance are the Baohai Fitness Center (宝海健身中心) and the park management office. The area east of the entrance and the secondary entrance to the west include a parking lot with 177 spaces, and a snack street along Baohai Road (宝海路) offers local Kunming delicacies.
