Guanghua Street in Kunming

Guanghua Street光华街 is a historic street located in the old town area of Kunming, in the Wuhua District. It spans from Zhengyi Road in the east to Longjing Street in the west. The street holds a rich historical significance and is one of the few remaining landmarks of old Kunming, offering a glimpse into the city’s evolution over the centuries.

Historical Background

Guanghua Street is steeped in history, with its name originating from the 1911 Xinhai Revolution. The street was previously divided into two sections:

  1. East Section (from Zhengyi Road to Yunrui Park) was historically known as Dongyuan Street because it was located near the eastern courtyard of the former governor’s mansion.
  2. West Section (from Longjing Street to Yunrui Park) was referred to as Yuanguanmenkou due to its proximity to the western gate of the governor’s residence.

Following the victory of the Xinhai Revolution, both sections were renamed Guanghua Street (光华街), inspired by the Chinese phrase “光复中华” (Restoration of China), which symbolized national revival.
