Huayudong Waterfall of Huayudong National Forest Park in Hekou County, Honghe

Location

Huayudong Waterfall(河口县花鱼洞瀑布) is located in Huayudong National Forest Park is situated in the northeastern part of Nanxi Town, Hekou County, Yunnan Province. It is located within the tropical rainforest of Xiaonanxi. The park is accessible by driving 27 kilometers along the Kunhe Highway from Hekou County.

Features

The park features a blend of karst formations, waterfalls, and tropical rainforests, integrating mountains, water, forests, and caves into a single scenic area. The cave scenery, water features, and vegetation harmonize beautifully.

Huayudong Cave

  • Location and Dimensions: Huayudong Cave is situated halfway up the mountain, with an entrance 12 meters wide and 8 meters high. The cave walls are adorned with stalactites resembling stone curtains. A dark river flows out from the left side of the cave chamber, where small fish with flower-like spots swim, hence the name “Huayu” (Flower Fish).
  • Water Source and Depth: The cave has a perennial spring inside. The deepest part of the cave is several dozen meters deep, extending approximately 6 kilometers in a winding and meandering path, with interconnected chambers.
  • Waterfall: The cave entrance naturally forms a four-tiered staircase leading to a waterfall. The waterfall, originating from a natural limestone cave about 12 meters wide, cascades down 26 meters in height and 4 meters in width. The water, spraying from a height of over 3 meters, is divided by rocks into several fragments as it plunges downward.

Scenery

  • Waterfall Appearance: The waterfall at the cave entrance forms a fan-shaped, 26-meter-high and 10-meter-wide cascade with four tiers, resembling the picturesque Water Curtain Cave. The flowing water tumbles among ancient trees, strange rocks, and unique boulders, creating a stunning visual of cascading water and flying mist with a roaring sound.
  • Surroundings: The surrounding tropical rainforest is dense with towering peaks and abundant epiphytic plants and buttressed trees. The clear river water reveals the riverbed, while tropical plants flourish along the riverbanks.
  • Butterflies and Flora: On the sand and rocky riverbanks, colorful butterflies are often seen fluttering around, especially when visitors in colorful clothing appear. The butterflies gather in increasing numbers, creating a vivid display of harmony between humans and nature.
