The name “Mandan” (曼旦) originates from a local legend. It is said that the son of the Houdan Dai tribe leader went to Oudomxay (乌德) in Laos to marry a princess. After the bride price was settled, the marriage proceeded, and the tribe decided to settle in the area, naming it “Mandan,” meaning “the place of pledge.”
