Lincang, named after the Lancang River (澜沧江), is a fascinating place known for being where the sun “turns” and where the Pacific and Indian Oceans’ watersheds diverge. It is one of the world’s most significant origins of tea culture, and it serves as both a geographical and cultivation center for tea trees. Lincang is also one of the first regions where tea was discovered and used.
Situated along the Tropic of Cancer, Lincang enjoys a spring-like climate year-round, with an average annual temperature of 17.5°C, making it one of the best places in the world for growing tea trees. Thanks to its exceptional natural resources, Chinese climatologist Lü Jiong (吕炯) praised Lincang as “one of the world’s rarest areas for optimal biological breeding.” In 1982, after the renowned modern tea expert Wu Juenong (吴觉农) visited Lincang, he proposed establishing the world’s premier tea plantation here. Today, that vision is becoming a reality in Lincang.
This tea city is the birthplace of Pu’er tea (普洱茶), Yunnan black tea (滇红茶), and large-leaf steamed green tea (大叶种蒸青绿茶). It is China’s largest tea-producing city, renowned globally as the “Tea King of the World” (天下茶尊), the “Capital of Black Tea” (红茶之都), and the “World’s Tea Warehouse” (天下茶仓). In 2014, Lincang was honored with China’s “Golden Bud Award” (金芽奖) for tea brands and was recognized as the only city to win the “Most Charming Tea Culture City” award in China.
