Since 2015, eight cities and prefectures in Yunnan have been connected by bullet trains. In 2016, the Shanghai-Kunming, Yunnan-Guangxi and Kunming-Yuxi lines allowed Kunming, Yuxi, Qujing and Wenshan to have bullet trains. In 2018, Chongxiong and Dali were included into the national high-speed rail network. At the beginning of 2019, Lijiang and Honghe were linked to Kunming by bullet trains.

27.319 billion yuan was invested in high-speed railways in 2018. As of February 21, China Railway Kunming Group has served 6.812 million passengers, a year-on-year increase of 25.4%.

In 2019, construction of the Kunming-Chongqing high-speed railway will begin in Yunnan, the Yunnan section of the Chengdu-Guiyang line will complete, and the Guangong-Yongren section of the Chengdu-Kunming line will be renovated. Progress will be made in building the Panzhihua-Dali-Lijiang, Mengzi-Wenshan and Lincang-Qingshuihe railways. More than 28 billion yuan will be invested in these rail projects.
