Kunming Cultural Center
Overview
The Kunming City Cultural Center (昆明市文化馆) was established in 1950 and is located at 94 Renmin Zhong Road, Kunming (within the Wenmiao area). As a public service unit under the Kunming Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, and Sports, it is dedicated to promoting cultural education, public welfare cultural services, and the protection of intangible cultural heritage. The center also organizes city-wide cultural activities, supports grassroots cultural organizations, and facilitates both local and international folk cultural exchanges.

- The First Kunming New Rural Cultural Art Performance and the “Laugh and Smile” Kunming Quyi (local comedy) contest.
- Various competitions, including children’s poetry, storytelling, drawing, and calligraphy contests in Kunming.
Awards
The center has received numerous accolades for its cultural contributions:
- In 2013, the Kunming Flower Lantern Drama titled “Neighbors, Hens, and Mixed Breeds” won the 10th China Arts Festival Drama “Stars Award” for its themes of “closeness to the people and harmony in the community”.
- The Kunming Harmonious Stage—“Feng Feng Cultural Service Project” received the Stars Award for Public Cultural Service Projects and the “Excellent Mass Cultural Activity” brand title.
- The small play “Watching Over” won the Best Play Award at the 5th National Small Play and Sketch Contest.
- The “Wei Huadian” program won the Gold Award for Self-Created Programs at the 2nd Yunnan Province “Big Happy” Mass Cultural Square Dance Competition, along with the Outstanding Organization Award.
Preservation and Inheritance
In November 2019, the Kunming City Cultural Center was officially listed as a protected unit for the “Dian Opera” (滇剧) project in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Unit directory.
Awards and Honors
- November 18, 2021: The Public Service Department of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism named Kunming City Cultural Center as a first-level cultural center in the 5th National Cultural Center Evaluation.
