Overview
Moduo Village, a small community in the northwest of Xiaolongtan Town, Kaiyuan City, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, comprises 39 households and a population of 131 people. Surrounded by lush green mountains on three sides, the village is nestled within a pristine forest landscape, offering a view reminiscent of a modern ink painting. A serene pond within the village reflects the blue sky and white clouds, enhancing the picturesque setting.
Historical Context
Historically, Moduo Village was relatively unknown and impoverished. Due to its mountainous terrain and limited arable land, coupled with a lack of diverse industries, the villagers faced difficulties in increasing their income. Before 2019, the village had 5 impoverished households registered in the poverty alleviation program.
Transformation Strategy
To leverage its unique natural resources for development, Moduo Village needed a new approach. The village adopted the principle that “protecting the ecology means embracing happiness.” By integrating ecological protection with daily life, production, and resource management, the village aimed to turn natural resources into economic capital, thereby expanding its economic development channels.
Xu Yuanhai, the Secretary of the Green Chachong Village Party Branch, highlighted that maintaining ecological balance was crucial for the village’s prosperity.
Development and Infrastructure
Significant changes began in 2016, driven by targeted poverty alleviation policies. Investments included:
- Renovation Projects: 6.152 million yuan was invested in upgrading 19 houses and rebuilding 2.
- Infrastructure Improvements: 740,000 yuan for a comprehensive construction project, 1.45 million yuan for road improvements, and additional funds for beautification projects, including public toilets and garbage pits.
- Green Initiatives: 304,000 yuan was invested in aesthetic upgrades, and 212,000 yuan in green space enhancements.
By 2019, a new water pipeline connecting the village to the San Taipu Reservoir resolved irrigation issues, and 200,000 yuan was allocated for road paving, improving access to the town.
Economic Growth
In 2020, Moduo Village continued to enhance its infrastructure and environmental quality. Notable achievements include:
- Citrus Farming: Xu Yuanhai led the planting of over 2,400 citrus trees, which are now producing high-quality fruit. The expected income from this crop is over 100,000 yuan.
- Diversified Agriculture: The village now boasts 150 acres of chestnut trees, 30 acres of citrus, 150 acres of peaches, 50 acres of loquats, and over 200 acres of vegetables and spices.
As a result, the average net income per person reached over 18,200 yuan in 2020. All impoverished households were lifted out of poverty, transforming Moduo from a struggling village into a prosperous community admired by its neighbors.

The success story of Moduo Village highlights the potential of green development. By turning their natural resources into economic assets, the villagers have achieved a remarkable improvement in living standards and environmental sustainability. “Protecting the green mountains and clear waters has brought us happiness,” said Pu Wenping, the Party Secretary of Moduo Village. Villagers are grateful for the support and the positive changes it has brought to their lives.
