Qilin Park in Qilin District, Qujing
Qilin Park (麒麟公园) is located in the center of Qujing City (曲靖市), Yunnan Province (云南省). Established in 1983, it covers an area of 150 acres. The grand entrance is majestic and embodies ethnic characteristics. Inside the park, the pavilions, platforms, towers, and terraces are built in an antique style, featuring a carefully arranged layout that is both elegant and charming.
Main Attractions
The park’s landscape is beautifully reflected in the water, with pavilions and buildings arranged harmoniously. It has earned the nickname “the most extraordinary lake and mountain scenery, with pavilions and towers rivaling Suzhou and Hangzhou.” The grand entrance consists of two ancient-style pavilions, flanked by a pair of Qilin (麒麟) statues. The tops of the entrance are adorned with dragon (龙) and phoenix (凤) motifs, symbolizing good fortune.
To the right is the Bonsai Garden (盆景园), accessible via winding corridors, exhibition halls, flower shops, and pavilions. On the west side of the lake lies the Yingyue Tower (映月楼), surrounded by shimmering waters and blooming stone lotuses. Under the bright moon, the lake, separated by stone arch bridges and lotus bridges, transforms into a breathtaking scene known as “Three Pools Reflecting the Moon.”
The heart of the lake features three main attractions: Dong Island (东岛), Lake Center Island (湖心岛), and Plum Blossom Island (梅花岛). These spots are popular for leisure and recreation among citizens and tourists, making them notable sights in Qujing. On Lake Center Island, the elegant Xiaoxiang Tower (潇湘楼), along with the Niaoying Pavilion (迭莺亭), Shuyuan Pavilion (书院亭), and Qixian Pavilion (麒仙阁), display diverse architectural styles, complemented by leisurely boats on the water, creating a picturesque scene.
Community Engagement in Qujing
Qujing City is leading the “Park +” initiative, enhancing the park experience for residents. Children play in Qilin Park, young people jog at Riverside Park, and seniors enjoy tea and flowers at Longtan Park (龙潭公园). This reflects the daily life of Qujing residents and the improvements made in urban parks.
Qujing has embraced the concept of “the people build the city, and the city serves the people,” integrating ecological elements into community life. The focus on “Park +” activities aims to enhance park quality, expand services, and further unleash green benefits. By 2024, over 200 activities and more than 400 performances have been organized under the “Yuyuan +” initiative.
“Park +” Performances
From July to September, Qilin Park hosts a nine-week summer cultural event. During this time, all nine counties, cities, and districts in Qujing take turns showcasing unique cultural and artistic performances, exhibitions, and promotional activities. The lively atmosphere features a variety of programs that engage the audience, creating an energetic and enjoyable experience.
“Park +” Reading Initiatives
Longtan Park has introduced a “Reading Corner” (书香龙潭读书角), combining service windows with the internet and reading experiences. This area includes modern and traditional reading zones equipped with shade canopies, electronic screens, charging stations, and stylish lighting, catering to various reading preferences. Visitors can also access a “Digital Library” through electronic screens or QR codes, offering free reading of 116,000 digital books and 2,000 electronic journals. This new reading environment paints a vibrant picture of a literary city.
“Park +” Cultural Innovation
Liaokuo Park (寥廓公园) has undergone renovations that include restoring old management service facilities and activating idle resources. By incorporating various designs and operations into the park, cultural products are connected to ecological themes. New elements like “Cuang Culture” and “Jingning Ice Cake” have been introduced, bringing cultural experiences into everyday life. Monthly promotions of unique cultural products will provide diverse creative experiences for visitors.
“Park +” Sports Activities
Cultural and Sports Parks have upgraded facilities like basketball, tennis, and badminton courts while introducing various sports events. Regular professional sports teams will offer fitness activities and guidance to encourage correct exercise habits among citizens. This initiative aims to create an inclusive park for all ages.
In addition, fitness facilities have been added throughout urban parks, attracting a steady stream of residents who engage in exercise daily. The green spaces have become essential areas for leisure and fitness.
Going forward, Qujing City plans to enhance urban parks’ ecological, cultural, economic, and social values through high standards and a commitment to diverse activities, aiming to continuously improve residents’ sense of gain, happiness, and pride.
