The King Banyan Tree

The King Banyan Tree (佤山榕树王) is located along the old road from Lancang County (澜沧县) to Ximeng County, approximately 48 kilometers along the Muxi Line, and about 12 kilometers from the new county town. This banyan tree stands over 60 meters tall, with a canopy diameter of around 100 meters. It features more than 20 aerial roots, extending 50 meters wide, creating a striking and unique landscape.

In Wa Mountain (佤山), banyan trees are revered as sacred trees. Almost every village has a banyan tree, which is well protected. According to local legend, the canopy of this tree is where the god Muyiji (木依吉) enjoys observing the world. From its lofty height, the god can sense human suffering and offers help whenever people are in need.

To honor the banyan tree, villagers protect it and its surroundings, preventing damage to any plants nearby and restricting activities around the tree. Over time, this has led to a stable ecosystem, where bees, snakes, wild cats, and various birds live safely, showcasing a harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
