As of 2014, Yao'an County covers an area of 1803 square kilometers with 5 towns and 4 townships: Dongchuan Town(栋川镇), Guanglu Town(光禄镇), Qianchang Town(前场镇), Mixing Town(弥兴镇), Taiping Town(太平镇), Shizhong Township(适中乡), Zuomen Township(左门乡), Guantun Townsship(官屯乡) and Dahekou Township(大河口乡).

Yao 'an is surrounded by mountains and wide in the middle. Yao’an Plain, covering an area of 119 square kilometers, is a typical plateau basin. It is the largest Plain in chuxiong yi prefecture. It is known as "the granary in yunnan".

Yaoan's climate is classified as warm and temperate. In winter, there is much more rainfall than in summer. The climate here is classified as Csb by the Köppen-Geiger system. The average annual temperature is 17.0 °C. In a year, the average rainfall is 908 mm. The least amount of rainfall occurs in January. The average in this month is 10 mm. Most precipitation falls in July, with an average of 188 mm.
