Shiping County Festivals and Events
Shiping county is dominated by Han nationality and ethnic minorities make up about 60% of the whole population. Ethnic minorities include Yi, Hui, Dai, Hani, etc, living in Shiping County for generations. Each ethnic group in Shiping County created its own festivals. Here below are some festivals and activities in Shiping County.
1. The Torch Festival of Yi Ethnic Minority
It is the grandest festival of Yi people. Every year on the 24th day of the 6th lunar month, Yi villages are all to prepare a big feast and have a joyous gathering. At night, villagers light their torches and shout to march through the field. It means scaring away the devil and welcoming the harvest.
2. Shengmian Festival of Dai Ethnic Minority生面节
Shengmian Festival of Dai Ethnic Minority is held in Dazhai Village of Yilong Town in Shiping County, Honghe.
3. Tiaogupo Festival of Yi Ethnic Minority跳鼓坡节
Yi people living in southern mountain area of Shiping County have a Tiaogupo festival on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month. Tiaogu means dancing with drumbeat. Today's Tiaogupo festival is no longer exclusively for men, men and women can go up the mountain, singing, dancing and trading goods.
4. Dragon Worship (Jilong) Festival of Huayao Yi Ethnic People
Deep in the mountains of Shiping county, there lives a branch of the Yi minority with a very small population: Nisu. Every year in the first Horse day after the Spring Festival, Nisu people hold Dragon Worship Festival to commemorate their hero Aron. Dragon Worship festival has a strong dragon welcoming team and unique dragon worship ceremony.
5. Song and Dance Festival of Huayao Yi Ethnic People
In the northern part of Shiping county, three towns of Shaochong, Longwu and Longpeng are inhabited by the world's only over 30,000 Huayao Yi people花腰彝族. In order to promote the communication, carry forward the national traditional culture, and show the charm of Huayao Yi's song and dance, Shiping county of Yunnan Province held the first Song and Dance Festival of Huayao Yi ethnic people on November 28th, 2005. During the festival, Huayai Yi people sing and dance in the their festival dress.
6. Red Bayberry Festival杨梅文化节
Special geographical location and natural condition make Shiping County the best place for high-yielding and high-quality bayberry. Bayberry industry in Shiping County has developed into an integrated "Bayberry Ecological Tourism" for leisure and entertainment. Every year in May, Bayberry festival is held and attracts a lot of tourists from home and abroad to sightsee and taste.
