Route One: Cycle on the west bank of Erhai Lake, 46 KM for One Day
Your biking tour begins Dali Old Town, pass Three Pagodas and stop to explore Xizhou Old Town , continue to head to Zhoucheng and drive back via the same route. You need to drive about 23 kilometers for one way and 46 kilometers altogether.
Route Two: One Circle around Erhai Lake, 128 KM for Two Days
Day 1: around 50 Km for 4 hours’ riding. Dali Old Town – Three Pagodas – Xizhou Town – Zhoucheng Village – Taoyuan Dock – Shangguan Town – Shuanglang Village (Nanzhao Island).
Day 2: around 80 km for 6 hours’ riding. Shuanglang Village – Wase Town (Little Puto Island) – Haidong Village – Jinsuo Island – Huanhai Road – Airport Road – Erhai Dock – Haixi Village Highway – Caicun Dock – Dali Old Town.
The best time to visit Jinsuo Islet should be from June to August, during that time is very comfortable. The seasonal variation of Dali is not obvious, there is no obvious hot summer and bitter winter. And the weather in Dali is spring all the year round.
The Three Pagodas, the symbolic building of Dali, was first built in the time of Nanzhao Kingdom and Dali Kingdom in 9th and 10th century. Looking from a distance, the pagodas are like three ballpoint pens standing between the magnificent Cangshan Mountain and elegant Erhai Lake.
When you are at Erhai Lake, it is advisable to visit the fishing villages of Bai people nearby, which is the few fishing villages on the altiplano. The famous movie of 1950s, the Five Golden Flowers, reflected the life here. Erhai Park in Xiaguan was designed and built for tourists to sea Erhai Lake. You can get there from any place in the city proper by taxi and that will only cost you 5 yuan. If you are interested, you can take ships there to visit Erhai. There are wooden ships and yachts. Remember to bargain before you get aboard. Ordinary boats do not go to the Nanzhao Love Islands. They usually come back after arriving at Golden Shuttle Island, Small Putuo Island and Kwan-yin Pavilion. If you rent boats, safety is the most important. When it is summer and autumn, especially when Husband Awaiting Clouds turn up on the Cangshan Mountain, it is better for you not to go on the sea.
Clothing
Erhai Lake is in Yunnan, the weather is pleasant. Tourists can bring the spring clothing and do not need to bring the thick clothes. In addition to it is a little bit cold at night, the temperature is suitable during other time.
Erhai Lake Park(洱海公园) is a park at the southern end of the Erhai Sea in Dali City, Yunnan Province. It is the first stop to visit the Cangshan and Erhai Scenic Area. The pavilions, terraces and buildings echo each other. It has become the largest comprehensive park with the complete facilities in Dali. The sea water temperature is around 7 °C even in the winter and summer, especially for winter swimming. Today, Erhai Park has become an important flower breeding base in western Yunnan.
Erhai Lake Park is located in the east end of Erhai Lake. It is the first station for the Cangshan and Erhai tour. In December of 1976, the Erhai Lake Park was built here.
Erhai Lake Park consists of the Haixin Pavilion, swimming pool, promenade, zoo, botanical garden, flower garden and the place for fishing. To the south of Wanghai Tower, there is a colorful garden. All kinds of Dali famous flowers like camellia, rhododendron, plum, lily, compete for beauty. On the north side of the sea promenade is 300 grades of bluestone steps that are more than 3 feet wide, like a waterfall rushing down, directly to the beach in the middle of the park.
Tuanshan Hill(团山) stands in the park. It was the hunting place for royal family in the ancient time. It was a island of Erhai Lake before. With the changing environment, it became the hill beside the lake.
When the weather is fine in Dali, the sunshine is heated, and ultraviolet light is strong. People should avoid direct sunlight, and the sun hat preparation is required during outdoor activities, a pair of sunglasses will make you comfortable in the trip.
Tianchi Lake(天池), also called as the Shuchang Lake(署场海), is entitled as the national natural reserve. 20 km west of Yunlong County, the Tianchi Lake is embraced by mountains peacefully. It is the famous highland lake of west Yunnan. Among the dense forest, there are various wild animals and plants. Especially the primitive Yunnan pine forest preserves a good ecological environment.Due to the abundant natural resources, it is known as the national natural reserve. As if a graceful lady, Tianchi Lake represents her beauty to the world continuously.
Travelers can take the shuttle bus from Xiaguan to Yunlong County firstly. It is advisable for travelers to drive to Tianchi Lake. It will be convenient for you to transfer.
Located in Tianchi Mountain, more than 20 kilometers west of Yunlong County, Tianchi Lake is 2551 meters above sea level, with a water surface of about 1.5 square kilometers, The deepest point is 16.8 meters, and the average water depth is 8.5 meters. It is 175 kilometers from Xiaguan and 574 kilometers from Kunming.
A legend is handed down by locals around Tianchi Lake. It was a grass for graze, rich in the wild flowers. One year, the son of the Dragon King of Erhai Lake could not stand the abuse of the maiden and the friction between the brothers, he determined to leave the Erhai Sea and find another place to live. So he invited Dali’s caravan to carry the things form his father in the mountain gorge to the direction of the setting sun. Finally, he was fascinated by the charming dam hidden in the mountain. At the moment, I will settle down and let the horse riders go to the mountain to spend the night. Each person will have a blue brick as a pillow. Repeatedly, don’t open their eyes regardless of what happens at night so that you can be safe. In the middle of the night, with lightning and thunder,it rained heavily. When the weather was fine, they discovered that the blue bricks of the pillows last night turned into gold bricks. The fascinating green grass dam disappeared. Instead, it was a green lake. The lake slammed down the Dongshan Pass and flowed into the dry fields under the mountain.
Tianchi Reserve is the most important area for the growth of Pinus of Yunnan and the snub-nosed monkey. It has a large scale of virgin forests and is home to more than 50 species of first-class and second-class protected animals such as the snub-nosed monkey. The national first-class protected plants include Taxus chinensis var. chinensis(红豆杉), Taxus chinensis var. Mairei(南方红豆杉), Taxus wallichiana(T. yunnanensis)(云南红豆杉) and Torreya yunnanensis(云南榧树). When the weather is fine in Dali, the sunshine is heated, and ultraviolet light is strong. People should avoid direct sunlight, and the sun hat preparation is required during outdoor activities, a pair of sunglasses will make you comfortable in the trip.
Please protect the environment of Tianchi Lake.
White Dragon Pool (白龙潭) is a captivating natural attraction located in Heqing County (鹤庆县) near Dali (大理). This serene site features numerous pools of varying sizes and shapes, each offering unique scenic beauty. Legend has it that these pools are the Buddhist beads scattered by Guanyin Bodhisattva (观音菩萨) across the Heqing Plain (鹤庆坝子).
Close to Xinhua Village (新华村), the western bank of the pool boasts Xueshi Rock (雪石岩), adorned with ancient inscriptions that read “Mirror Platform Snow Stone” (镜台雪石), one of the Eight Scenic Views of Heqing (鹤阳八景).
A clear spring gushes forth from the base of Jiuding Mountain (九鼎山), converging into White Dragon Pool. The water here is crystal clear, cool, and refreshing. A green embankment divides the pool, creating two halves that resemble a pair of blue sapphires. The surface of the pool is calm, reflecting the surroundings like a mirror, disturbed only by the gentle breeze that creates ripples, enhancing the tranquility and freshness of the scene.
Despite its relatively small size, White Dragon Pool possesses an endearing charm compared to other dragon pools in Heqing, making it feel like a delicate gem. The surroundings include lush greenery and traditional Bai architecture (白族建筑), contributing to the area’s peaceful ambiance.
On the western bank of White Dragon Pool, a small path leads through thickets to reveal large white rocks inscribed with ancient characters. Known as Xueshi Rock Carvings (雪石岩石刻), these inscriptions date back to the Ming Dynasty (明代) during the Jiajing era (嘉靖). Among the inscriptions, only one depicts a carved figure, while the others feature poetic verses by renowned scholars. The characters “Xueshi Rock” (雪石岩) were penned by magistrate Ma Qing (马卿) in a bold and flowing script, celebrated for its artistic flair. Legend has it that he drunkenly inscribed these words with his sleeve dipped in ink.
Heqing, located in the northwest Yunnan Plateau (滇西北高原), is a picturesque highland water town renowned for its pristine environment. It boasts the cleanest skies, purest waters, and most dynamic clouds. The various pools, referred to as “Dragon Pools” (龙潭), are nature’s jewels, including Yanglong Pool (羊龙潭), Warm Water Dragon Pool (温水龙潭), Yellow Dragon Pool (黄龙潭), and several others. Each pool possesses distinct characteristics and pristine water, making them ideal spots for relaxation and tourism.
White Dragon Pool harmonizes beautifully with its surroundings. This tranquil oasis, resembling a piece of jade, rests serenely beneath the arching mountains of Heqing. It complements the nearby Xueshi Rock and the surrounding Bai ethnic villages (白族村落), as the continuously flowing mountain spring cleanses both the pool and the hearts of springtime visitors.
As spring approaches, the water of White Dragon Pool reflects various hues. Under a clear sky, it gleams with a deep blue, appearing almost dreamlike. When the trees along the shore begin to sprout green leaves, the surface ripples like shards of silver, enhancing the ethereal beauty of the reflections. As the reeds sway in the breeze, the distant water surface becomes a hazy backdrop, accentuating the delicate beauty of the grass.
When sunlight shines directly on the water, the clarity reveals the delicate blossoms of sea vegetables, each petal appearing almost sculpted. The essence of spring gradually seeps from the depths of the tranquil pool, bringing life to the treetops, grass tips, and the earth at the water’s edge.
In early spring, White Dragon Pool eagerly awaits a gentle rain, which will awaken the spirit of spring, quietly brewing. Once the rains arrive, a floral spectacle unique to White Dragon Pool will unfold, with cherry blossoms blooming like a fiery dragon, casting warm reflections across the waters.
Visiting on a clear sunny day offers a chance to experience vibrant spring blooms or a more subdued atmosphere. Regardless, the waters of White Dragon Pool are filled with the essence of spring, brightening the landscape of Heqing. The reflections in the pool will leave your eyes shimmering like its waters, holding within them the warmth of spring.
In White Dragon Pool Park (白龙潭公园), a long corridor surrounds the area, filled with various flowers and plants that please the eye. If you tire of walking, you can take a moment to rest. This pause may deepen your connection with the spring atmosphere of White Dragon Pool and bring you closer to its indescribable spirit. Here, nature and humanity harmonize, ensuring that your visit will be a fulfilling experience.
White Dragon Pool may not hold much water, but the spring flows continuously, and the surrounding ditches are always filled with water. The pool retains a fresh and unembellished quality, resembling a small gem. Over time, visitors come to appreciate its charm.
The area is quiet, with elegant pavilions and structures, making it an ideal spot for sitting, reading, enjoying the scenery, sketching, or simply resting.
To reach White Dragon Pool, visitors can travel by road from Dali City, which is approximately 30 kilometers away. Public transportation options include buses or taxis that can take you directly to Heqing County. It is advisable to check local transportation schedules for the most convenient travel times.
East Lake (东湖) is located in the eastern part of Yousuo Township (右所乡), Eryuan County (洱源县), covering an area of 6 to 10 square kilometers. It mirrors the beauty of West Lake (西湖), while the Mijia River (弥苴河) flows like a dragon from the northwest of East Lake towards Erhai Lake (洱海), adding stunning riverside views. Known as the “Hometown of Lotus Flowers” (荷花之乡) in Eryuan County, the area is dotted with four villages, creating a picturesque landscape where lakes and villages coexist. The lake is filled with vast patches of lotus flowers, surrounded by lush willows and reeds, forming a beautiful harmony of nature. In summer, East Lake transforms into a stunning sight, with thousands of lotus blossoms blooming in a riot of colors, creating the majestic view of “万朵莲花开海市,一天星斗下人间” (“Ten thousand lotus flowers bloom in the sea city, under the stars in the sky”). Rowing on the lake during midsummer reveals vibrant lotus flowers, playful fish, and the aroma of ripening rice, making it feel like a paradise.
The crystal-clear springs at East Lake create another unique scene. These springs gushing from the foot of the eastern mountain form a large pond of over 1,500 square meters, surrounded by temples and pavilions, with ancient pines and cypress trees covering nearly a square kilometer. This sets the stage for East Lake’s distinctive “lake within a lake” landscape. The largest ancestral temple of the Bai ethnic group (白族) in the Dongchuan Basin (东川坝子) is located here. Each year from July 23 to 25, worshippers from Dongchuan and surrounding areas gather at Longtan Benzhumiao (龙潭本主庙) for lively ceremonies and prayers.
East Lake’s beauty lies in its rich lotus flowers and the charm of its highland water town, allowing visitors to feel the close bond between life and nature, as well as a sense of tranquility and simplicity.
East Lake is located in the eastern part of Yousuo Town in Eryuan County and is separated from West Lake by the Mijia River. The lake is directly connected to Erhai Lake via the Yong’an River (永安江). With an area of approximately 4.7 square kilometers, the lake’s layout creates the scenic blend of “a village within a lake, and a lake within a village.”
Eryuan, the source of Erhai Lake, was known as Langqiong (浪穹). In 1530, during a plague in Yunnan, the scholar Yang Sheng’an (杨升庵), also known as Yang Shen (杨慎), came to Dali and Eryuan. The stunning scenery made him forget his troubles, as expressed in his poem about Langqiong:
远梦似曾经此地,
游子恍疑归故乡。
谁道洱河千胜景,
源头此处更澄清。
From the mountain foot to the shores of Erhai, this fertile land has always been known for its fish and rice, a paradise since ancient times. The Mijia River snakes like a dragon from north to south into Erhai, dividing the region into two, with ancient trees and verdant plants lining the riverbanks for miles. East Lake, with its stunning views, is indeed a treasure.
There are many great spots to enjoy lotus flowers in Eryuan, such as Cibi Lake (茈碧湖), Caohai Wetland (草海湿地), Yousuo West Lake, and of course, East Lake.
The lotus flowers of East Lake are most magnificent from June to August. Walking through the lake during the peak summer months, one can see vast lotus fields displaying vibrant red and white blossoms. The scene is breathtaking, reminiscent of “万朵莲花开海市,一天星斗下人间.”
As you enter the “Hometown of Lotus,” you’re greeted by a sea of flowers. Different varieties sway in the wind, embodying the elegance of “the gentlemen of flowers.” After a summer rain, the waters of the dawn-soaked cypress trees are clear, and the lotus leaves and flowers are unblemished, creating a picturesque view that resembles “惟有绿荷红菡萏,卷舒开合任天真” (“Only the green lotus and red flowers roll and unfold, free and innocent”). These blooming flowers appear as delicate spirits beneath the sky, untainted and ethereal.
In July, the best time to admire the lotus flowers is highlighted by a quote from the Ming Dynasty scholar Ai Zixiu (艾自修) from Dongchuan, who praised East Lake:
烟渚渔歌,柳湾荻岸,
渔舟连浦,两两歌来。
游人听之,每担酒换鱼,
烹鲜对酌。
Another poem by Yang Chengchun (杨承淳) from the Ming Dynasty reads:
湖光荡漾几回纹,
渔父歌声闹水滨。
信口舫敲湘汉句,
断肠笛弄雁鸿云。
三三对曲烟蓑合,
两两归帆荻岸分。
最趁夕阳含缺处,
前村沽酒带余醺。
The beauty of East Lake lies in its multitude of lotus flowers and its pristine, natural state. The local Bai people have cared for every flower and leaf in the area for generations, embodying a love for lotus flowers in their hearts. The area has historical significance, with figures like Lady Bai Jiefu (白洁夫人) from the Tang Dynasty and Gao Shanggui (高上桂) in the Qing Dynasty contributing to its cultural legacy.
Experience the charm of East Lake and immerse yourself in its natural beauty and cultural richness!
Huayudong (花鱼洞, Huā Yú Dòng) is located approximately 9 kilometers northeast of Deju Township (德苴乡, Dé Jū Xiāng) in Midu County (弥渡县, Mí Dù Xiàn), Dali (大理, Dàlǐ), nestled within a picturesque canyon. The area is characterized by blooming wildflowers, tranquil surroundings, and melodious bird songs, creating a feeling of paradise. The name “Huayudong” derives from the colorful fish (花鱼, Huā Yú) found in its pools.
Huayudong is steeped in local legends. According to folklore, where there is water, there are dragons, and these caves are often referred to as “Dragon Pools” (龙潭, Lóng Tán). The dragon is revered in Chinese culture, symbolizing power and auspiciousness, and locals celebrate this connection with annual dragon worship activities. Over time, this has evolved into the Huayudong Tourism Culture Festival (花鱼洞旅游文化节, Huā Yú Dòng Lǚyóu Wénhuà Jié).
Surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant birdlife, the pools offer breathtaking views and the unique spectacle of the colorful fish.
Upon arriving at the Huayudong Tourism Culture Festival, I was greeted by the joyful atmosphere and lively performances. The water-splashing ceremony commenced, with colorful fountains adding a festive flair. Despite the potential for getting soaked, the joyful ambiance made the experience delightful.
The festival features cultural performances, including traditional mountain songs, which highlight local customs. I was particularly moved by an elder, a seasoned performer of these songs, who has dedicated his life to this art. The richness of the local culture was evident throughout the festival, reflecting the community’s spirit.
As I explored the food street, the aromas of local delicacies filled the air, showcasing the transformation of rural life. Visitors came for relaxation and to savor farm-fresh meals, ensuring a fulfilling and healthy holiday experience.
Accompanied by friends, we hiked the steep slopes to explore the male dragon pool. The rocky terrain, though challenging, led us to the hidden caves. Inside, we encountered natural formations that sparkled in the light, with various chambers filled with intriguing stone structures like stone temples and tables.
After the water-splashing event concluded, we finally explored the mystical Huayudong. The entrance to the cave was narrow, allowing only one boat to pass at a time, leading us into the depths where colorful lights illuminated the interior. Bats rested on the high ceilings, contributing to the cave’s mysterious ambiance.

Origin: Dali Binchuan
Dali Haishao Fish (大理宾川海稍鱼) is renowned for its delicate texture and exquisite flavor, sourced from local water and primarily made with white-scaled fish (白鳞鱼). The fish is prepared using fresh ingredients to preserve its quality.
To reach Haishao Reservoir in Binchuan County, take public transport or self-drive from Dali City (大理市). The journey takes approximately one hour.
Qinghai Lake (青海湖, Qīnghǎi Hú) in Xiangyun County (祥云县, Xiángyún Xiàn) is different from the famous Qinghai Lake in Qinghai Province (青海省, Qīnghǎi Shěng). This Qinghai Lake is a freshwater lake located 7 kilometers southeast of Xiangyun County, within Shalong Town (沙龙镇, Shālóng Zhèn). In the Yuan Dynasty (元代, Yuándài), it was known as “Qinghu” (青湖, Qīnghú), and during the Qing Dynasty (清代, Qīngdài), it was called “Qinglong Lake” (青龙湖, Qīnglóng Hú). Due to its clear waters year-round, it was later renamed Qinghai Lake.
With the establishment of a national-level water scenic area, the ecological environment of Qinghai Lake has gradually improved. Wild waterfowl such as the red-crowned crane (赤麻鸭, chìmǎyā), the great crested grebe (骨顶鸡, gǔdǐngjī), and the egret (白鹭, báilù) have returned to breed and inhabit this beautiful natural landscape.
Historically, Qinghai Lake has been known by various names, including Qinghu, Qinglonghai, and Qinghai, reflecting its long-standing reputation for clear waters. Since the Yuan Dynasty, it has been affectionately referred to as “Qinghai Moonlight” (青海月痕, Qīnghǎi Yuèhén), and is one of the “Eight Scenic Spots of Xiangyun” (祥云八大景, Xiángyún Bādàjǐng).
Qinghai Lake is situated about 5 kilometers southeast of Xiangyun County. Formed from a natural depression, the lake spans approximately 6.3 square kilometers. Its lower geographical position makes it a critical area for water accumulation, flood control, and drainage.
After the 1950s, frequent land reclamation and pond construction around Qinghai Lake led to a drastic reduction in its area, causing significant ecological damage. During dry years, the lake dried up, depriving nearby villages of water and hindering agricultural activities. Conversely, heavy rains led to flooding disasters.
From 2010 onwards, during the dry seasons, Qinghai Lake often ran dry, with minimal rainfall unable to meet local water needs. To restore the lake’s former beauty, the National Tobacco Monopoly Bureau invested 170 million yuan in water conservancy projects, which included dredging the lakebed and constructing surrounding embankments. As a result, Qinghai Lake has become a tourism and leisure destination, with the scenic hydrological landscape starting to take shape.
Qinghai Lake is a significant scenic area in Xiangyun County and is known for its high tourism value. At night, visitors can invite friends to enjoy the beauty of “Qinghai Moonlight.” As the moon rises from the east, its gentle reflection dances on the lake’s surface, accompanied by softly swaying green trees along the shore.
In poetic imagery, “The moon above and the moon below; the water and sky blend into one,” creating a picturesque scene that evokes deep emotions. A historical quote from the Qing Dynasty describes Qinghai Lake as: “恍疑龙抱骊珠卧,照映秋林桂子黄” (Huǎng yí lóng bào lí zhū wò, zhàoyìng qiū lín guì zǐ huáng), translating to “It seems like a dragon cradles a pearl, reflecting the golden autumn woods.”
Qinghai Lake is renowned for its abundance of fish species, including crucian carp (鲫鱼, jìyú), carp (鲤鱼, lǐyú), and green fish (青鱼, qīngyú). It also produces lotus roots (莲藕, lián’ǒu) and reeds (苇, wěi), making it a paradise for aquatic flora and fauna. The lakeside is adorned with lush bamboo and willows, providing a graceful ambiance under the moonlight.
Qinghai Lake can be accessed via local roads from Xiangyun County. Visitors may take buses or taxis from the county seat to reach the lake.
