Geographic Origin and Environment

Baoshan is located in Lujingba (潞江坝), a dry and hot river valley climate unique to Yunnan. This region is ideal for growing small bean coffee. Lujingba, located on the southern slopes of Gaoligong Mountain (高黎贡山), spans the banks of the Nu River (怒江) at altitudes ranging from 640 meters to 3,510 meters. The coffee-growing areas are mainly located between 800 to 1,200 meters in altitude, with some areas extending up to around 1,400 meters.

The climate is characterized by a subtropical monsoon climate, with an average annual temperature of 21.3°C, 2,334.5 hours of sunshine per year, and annual rainfall ranging from 721.51 to 1,000 millimeters. The accumulated temperature above 10°C reaches 7,800°C, and there is virtually no frost throughout the year. These environmental conditions make Baoshan one of the best regions for producing high-quality small-bean coffee.

History and Origins

Baoshan is one of the three major coffee-producing regions in Yunnan, and it is a pioneer in both coffee cultivation and processing in China. The region’s coffee cultivation history dates back to the mid-20th century. The oldest coffee trees in Baoshan are over 60 years old.

Since 1952, large-scale coffee cultivation began in Baoshan, and the region has accumulated decades of expertise in coffee farming. Due to the unique natural conditions of the Nu River basin and Kuhu River basin, along with years of accumulated cultivation technology, Baoshan coffee has earned an excellent reputation in the international market for its unique quality.

Development Stages of Baoshan Coffee Industry

The development of Baoshan coffee can be divided into four stages:

  1. Initial Stage (1950s): In the 1950s, Baoshan Arabica Coffee was successfully promoted for large-scale cultivation in Lujingba, and by 1960, the coffee planting area in the city reached nearly 10,000 acres.

  2. Decline Stage (1960s-1970s): Due to market issues, pests, and other factors, coffee cultivation in Baoshan experienced a decline. By the late 1970s, the city’s coffee plantation area shrank to just 0.3 acres.

  3. Restart Stage (1980s): In the late 1980s, with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the involvement of international coffee production groups, coffee prices surged, reaching as high as 30 yuan per kilogram. The Baoshan coffee industry began to recover, and by 1997, the city’s coffee plantation area had grown to nearly 30,000 acres.

  4. Rapid Growth Stage (1990s-Present): Since the launch of the Yunnan Province Bio-Resources Development Program, the Baoshan coffee industry has experienced rapid growth. This stage has seen significant advancements in the local coffee farming techniques and production scale.

Current Status and Recognition

As of recent years, Baoshan coffee continues to be highly regarded both domestically and internationally, known for its quality and the unique growing environment of Yunnan. It remains a flagship product of the Yunnan coffee industry, representing the excellence of China’s Arabica coffee.
