Binglie Yi Ethic Town in Wenshan City, Wenshan

Binglie Yi Ethnic Township (秉烈彝族乡) is situated in the northern part of Wenshan City (文山市), Yunnan Province (云南省). It borders Weimo Township (维末乡) of Yanshan County (砚山县) to the east and north, Matang Town (马塘镇) to the south, and Hongdian Town (红甸镇) to the west. The township government is located in Binglie Village (秉烈村), approximately 45 km from downtown Wenshan (文山市) and 13.1 km from National Highway 323 (323国道).

Cultural History

With a long history, Binglie Yi Ethnic Township (秉烈彝族乡) belonged to Lelongli (乐龙里) and the hereditary territory of the Zhou family (周应龙) during the Qing Dynasty. In 1949, it was divided into Binglie (秉烈) and Lujie (路结) townships. In 1950, it became part of the Fourth District of Wenshan County (文山县), was renamed Qianfeng Commune (前锋公社) in 1958, and became Binglie Commune (秉烈公社) in 1959. In 1984, it was changed to a district and officially designated as Binglie Yi Ethnic Township (秉烈彝族乡) in 1988.

Folk Culture

The township is home to multiple ethnic groups including Han, Zhuang, Miao, Yi, and Dai. The Yi culture is particularly vibrant, with the traditional Torch Festival (火把节) celebrated annually on the 24th day of the sixth lunar month. Other notable cultural elements include the Yi ethnic’s Sacred Lamp Dance (神灯舞) and the Zhuang ethnic’s Red Rice Festival (红饭节), both renowned throughout the city.
