Where is Hamugu

Located in the Northwestern Yunnan Province, Hamugu is only about 7 km to the west of Shangri-la town. It is a small village with 40 traditional Tibetan families believing in Tibetan Buddhism. They have bundled their savings to build a lodge for ecotourists drawn by the Napahai wetlands nearby.

Hamugu Tibetan Village in Shangrila, Diqing

Hamugu which means “the oldest village” in Tibetan language. Due to its strategic location Hamugu is regarded as an important staging post on the ancient tea road. Hamugu is approximately ten kilometers from the old town, at the foot of Shika Snow Mountain (石卡雪山) (which for the convenience of tourists has a cable car all the way to one of the peaks.). The village is also adjacent to Napa Lake (纳帕海), a seasonal wetland that is now the site of much tourist activity, especially horse riding, and hence an important sideline activity for local villagers. According to some sources, Hamugu was one of the first village communities in China to develop community based ecotourism.

Here is an excellent hiking designed in Hamugu include a good look at the ancient city and the most snow mountains in Shangri-la. After breakfast, depart from the village of Hamugu, passing the Kingan gorge, It may take 4 or 6 hours to arrived at Diji grassland. There is a good look at a panoramic view of the Dukezong ancient city. If you go ahead and clime about 4 hours, you can reach the Jisha flowered pastureland at an elevation of about 4100 meters, and have a good look at the Meili Snow Mountain, Haba Snow Mountain, Jade dragon Snow Mountain, and so on.

Home visit
Villagers will invite visitors to taste family-made Yak butter tea and other traditional dishes. Tourists will also explore the caverns and hermit caves in the cliff sides around the village, hike around the pastures, visit the village’s holy mountain, where gold miners supposedly dug for gold, yet found none.

Attraction Travel Tips:

· Best season: May – November
· Pay much attention to the rough mountain road when go up and go down the mountain.
· The area lie at elevation between 3200 and 4419 meters. Those with high blood pressure or heat disease, and the aged or weak should select an appropriate route and proceed with caution.
· Do not pick wild fruits or fungus. Beware of poisonous plants and fruits.
· It’s cold in this area, and temperature changes soon, please bring sufficient warm clothing, rain gear, water and sunscreen etc.

Farm Overview: Harum Valley Eco-Farm operates under a principle of ecological and organic farming. The farm avoids the use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and commercial feed. Instead, it emphasizes self-sustaining cycles, including self-grown feed and composting. The farm promotes a sustainable lifestyle by practicing and advocating ecological health.

Morning (10:00 – 12:00):

  1. Enjoy the Natural Scenery: Explore the Napa Lake International Important Wetland.
  2. Farm Tour: Discover the pastoral scenery of Harum Valley Eco-Farm.
  3. Harvest and Cooking: Pick potatoes, carrots, and lettuce. Use these ingredients, along with pork ribs, pork belly, and chicken provided by the farm, to prepare a delightful lunch.

Lunch Break (13:00 – 14:00):

  • Rest, free time, and photo opportunities.

Afternoon (14:00 – 16:00):

  1. Butter Tea Making: Learn to make traditional Tibetan butter tea. Participate in a family competition and taste the butter tea made with Tibetan salt, bricks of tea, butter, tea caddies, and tea strainers.
  2. Yak Yogurt Tasting: Sample homemade yak yogurt sweetened with rose honey.
  3. Dinner: Enjoy a meal of pure black barley noodles (grown by the farm) with six types of farm special side dishes.
