Brand Story
Yunnan Agricultural Reclamation Group Menghai Bajiao Pavilion Tea Industry Co., Ltd. (formerly Liming Tea Factory) was established in early 1955. Over nearly 50 years of challenges and changes, the people at Liming have continuously innovated, accumulated experience, and surpassed themselves. The Pu’er tea produced by the company is renowned worldwide. “Bajiao Pavilion” has become a famous brand of Pu’er tea.
The trademark of Liming Tea Factory is Bajiao Pavilion, and there is a beautiful legend about Bajiao Pavilion: It is said that a long time ago, the Buddha sent his eight great monks to preach the teachings everywhere. The eight great monks traveled across the seas, and one day, they arrived at the top of Mengzhe Mountain in Xishuangbanna. Looking down from the mountain, the entire Mengzhe Basin was covered by a sea of clouds, just as dawn broke. The morning light illuminated the clouds, creating a dazzling scene.
One of the monks said, “Wait for me; I will test the depth of the sea of clouds.” He leaped into the clouds and slowly descended, unaware of how thick the cloud layer was. The ground was very flat, fragrant with flowers, and alongside the fields of the Dai people, it formed a picturesque scene. While the monk was engrossed in the view, he suddenly heard, “The elder has come, but I have failed to welcome you properly; please take a look at the scenery, and I will send you up.” When the monk looked, he saw an old turtle, which had been arranged by the Buddha to guard the area. Later, it transformed into the mountain in the basin, known as Turtle Mountain. Subsequently, the Dai people built a pagoda on Turtle Mountain to commemorate this event.
The eight great monks continued their discussions until the clouds cleared, and they could see the beautiful landscape of Mengzhe Basin, a pastoral scene that was poetic and picturesque. They saw ancient tea trees and tea flowers in harmony, with the fragrance of tea flowers drifting through the forest, clear streams flowing by, fish swimming in shallow waters, and birds singing among the trees, creating a captivating picture.
The eight great monks were deeply moved by the tranquil environment and the refreshing fragrance of the tea flowers, and they praised in unison: “Wonderful! Wonderful!” They pointed in different directions, clapped their hands, and suddenly a pavilion appeared on the flat ground, surrounded by tea trees, with a stream flowing beneath it, which later became the Liushai River. They sat in the pavilion, enjoying fragrant tea while discussing their teachings.
Later, this pavilion became what is now known as Bajiao Pavilion, and the tea that the eight great monks drank is now the “Bajiao Pavilion” Pu’er tea. The eight corners represent the eight great monks beside the Buddha, with four doors facing east, south, west, and north, symbolizing the spread of Chinese Buddhist thought and the “Bajiao Pavilion” Pu’er tea throughout the world.
The reason Liming chose “Bajiao Pavilion” as the trademark for its Pu’er tea is primarily due to its unique geographical location—situated in the hometown of Pu’er tea, Xishuangbanna. Additionally, “Bajiao Pavilion” carries special meaning. In the legend, the eight corners represent the eight great monks beside the Buddha. In the philosophy of Liming’s people, these eight great monks symbolize tea lovers from all over the world. Liming aims to build bridges of friendship with quality Pu’er tea and share a beautiful tomorrow with people from all walks of life.
