Liujing Yi Ethnic Township is located in the southeastern part of Wenshan City (文山市), Yunnan Province (云南省), between latitudes 23°12′ to 23°18′ and longitudes 104°24′ to 104°38′, 26 kilometers from Wenshan urban area. It borders Lianhuatang in Xichou County (西畴县) to the east, Pojiao Township (坡脚乡) and Dalishu Township (大栗树乡) in Maguan County (马关县) to the south, Baiyun Township (白云乡) in Pingbian County (屏边县) to the west, and Kaohua Town (开化镇), Gumu Town (古木镇), and Zhuilijie Town (追栗街镇) to the north. The total area of the township is 172.8 square kilometers.

Cultural History

Liujing Yi Ethnic Township gets its name from Liujing Village (杨柳井村), the township’s government seat, where willow trees grow near the village well. Before 1963, the area was part of Maguan County (马关县), then it became part of Wenshan County (文山县). In 1949, it was known as Jingxin Township (景新乡), later renamed Cheliu Township (车柳乡). In 1950, it became Yangliu Jing Administrative Village in Gumu District (古木区). In 1958, it was changed to Yangliu Jing Commune. In 1963, it was incorporated into Gumu District of Wenshan County. In 1988, it was renamed Liujing Yi Ethnic Township.

Local Customs

Liujing Yi Ethnic Township is home to several ethnic groups, including the Han, Zhuang, Miao, Yi, and Dai peoples, with ethnic minorities making up 65% of the population. Yi culture is rich and diverse, and the traditional “Torch Festival” is held every year on the 24th day of the 6th month of the lunar calendar.
