Meng’a Town (勐阿镇) is located in the northern part of Menghai County (勐海县). It borders Jinghong City (景洪市) to the northeast, Mengsong Township (勐宋乡) to the southeast, Menghai Town (勐海镇) to the south, Mengman Town (勐满镇) to the west, Lancang County (澜沧县) to the northwest, and Mengwang Township (勐往乡) to the north. The town government is 32 km from Menghai County’s urban center.
History
Meng’a (勐阿) was historically a tusi (local chieftain) area with a long history. In 1570 (Ming Dynasty), it was one of the 12 “Banna” administrative divisions, grouped with Menghai (勐海) and Jingzhen (景真). By 1660 (Qing Dynasty), it had become a local commander’s domain. In 1913 (Republic of China), it belonged to the 2nd Administrative Sub-bureau (Mengzhe, 勐遮). In 1949, Meng’a and Mengkang (勐康) were part of Ningjiang County (宁江县), called Ankang District (安康区). In 1953, it became Banna Meng’a (版纳勐阿). In 1958, Meng’a District was established, and later that year renamed Steel Commune (钢铁公社). In 1959, it returned to Meng’a District. In 1968, it became Meng’a Revolutionary Committee, and in 1969 it was renamed “May Fourth” Commune (“五四”公社). In 1973, it was renamed Meng’a Commune (勐阿公社). In 1984, the name reverted to Meng’a District, and in 1987 it became Meng’a Lahu Ethnic Township (勐阿拉祜族乡). In 2003, it was upgraded to Meng’a Town (勐阿镇).
