Mengwang Township (勐旺乡) is located in the northeastern part of Jinghong City (景洪市), approximately 131 kilometers from the municipal government seat. It borders Jiangcheng County (江城县) across the Xiaohei River (小黑江) to the east, Mengla County (勐腊县) to the south along the Xiaohei River, Puwen Town (普文镇) to the west, and Pu’er City (普洱市) to the north. The township covers a total area of 766 square kilometers.
Cultural History
In the Dai language, “Mengwang” means “a place with flying squirrels and sparse population.” Historically, Mengwang Township (勐旺乡) was part of Mengxing (勐醒). In 1950, the Mengwang District (勐旺区) was established under Simao County (思茅县). In 1953, it was incorporated into Banna Mengwang (版纳勐旺), and in 1987, the district was abolished, and Mengwang Township (勐旺乡) was established.
