Nanjiluo Scenic Area of Biluo Snow Mountain in Weixi County, Diqing

Little is known about Nanjiluo(南极洛、南几洛、南机洛), which is also called Nanjieluo（南姐洛）, except its location in Badi Township, Weixi County, Yunnan Province. In the past year or two, there are a handful of its descriptions in some travelers’ travels with stunning photos, spectacular views and numerous lakes connected by waterfalls, but few details. In addition to glimpses from a small number of self-driving tourists from Kunming who happened to pass by, it was the terrific photos that were left by the local people in Weixi in their travels. However, few people know the path into it.

Nanjiluo is located on the Biluo Snow Mountain（碧罗雪山） opposite Badi Township, Weixi County, Yunnan Province. Currently, the mine road can reach to Lake 3, which is rather steep and narrow that only vehicles with better off-road performance can get over it. The winding mountain road of eight kilometers from camp 1 to camp 2 has more than 40 turning points, among which more than 10 turning points on the cliff side require reversing to pass. The condition here is very dangerous, which is quite a challenge for off-road lovers.

June is the time when the snow and ice of Nanjiluo melts, when everything comes back to life and when flowers bloom.

With 4,000 meters above sea level, the extremely cold upland has its brief but most gorgeous spring.

Among those flowers, the most amazing and rare is the one that stands proudly on the cliffside — the meconopsis.（绿绒蒿）

The meconopsis （绿绒蒿）belongs to the poppy family, papaver, so it is also known as Papaver Alpinum.（高山罂粟）.

The annual, or perennial, meconopsis(绿绒蒿) are two or three inches to three or five feet high, with diverse species and different flower types and colors, flowering from June to September every year. For example, the elegant meconopsis （优雅绿绒蒿）and dark green artemisia velutinensis（乌蒙绿绒蒿） are bluish violet, Meconopsis venusta（秀丽绿绒蒿）and Lijiang artemisia velutinensis（丽江绿绒蒿） are respectively light blue and light purple, Huanghua artemisia velutinensis（黄花绿绒蒿） and Gongshan artemisia velutinensis（贡山绿绒蒿） are bright yellow, Beautiful artemisia velutinensis（美丽绿绒蒿）are purple red. And there are also artemisia velutinensis（琴叶绿绒蒿） which is pink, rose and white, all of which are beautiful charming and quite attractive. A number of species have long and soft tomentum on their stems and thus get the name of meconopsis.（绿绒蒿）.

The meconopsis（绿绒蒿） is not only colorful and beautiful but also can be used in medicine. For example, the artemisia aeruginosa (also known as “yellow lotus” in Lijiang) and Nepalese artemisia aeruginosa（尼泊尔绿绒蒿） have the effect of clearing away heat and toxic materials. Artemisia racemose, also known as “red hairy American ginseng” and “snow ginseng”, is used as root medicine for treating vital energy deficiency, edema, asthma and other diseases.

Currently, the number of meconopsis（绿绒蒿） in Nanjiluo（南极洛） is extremely rare, and only a dozen or so were found during our tour. I hope that each and every one of us can protect her together after knowing this beautiful upland spirit, so that future visitors to Nanjiluo（南极洛） will be able to see her charming figure, and also let our children as well as grandchildren can see this beautiful plant and let it bloom in mysterious Nanjiluo（南极洛） year after year.
