Geographical Location Pingyuan Town is located in the western part of Yanshan County, Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. It borders Jiayi Town to the east, Ashe Township and Dehou Town of Wenshan County to the south, Zhongheying Township of Kaiyuan City to the west, and Nijiao Township of Qiubei County to the north. The town government is 78 kilometers away from Yanshan County, with an administrative area of 595.22 square kilometers.
Historical Evolution The history of Pingyuan Town can be traced back to before the Three Kingdoms period when its territory was part of Zangke County, known as Tanfeng County. Later, with historical changes, the town area belonged to various regimes including Dali Kingdom, Nanzhao Kingdom, Dali Kingdom (modern Wenshan Prefecture), and Lin’an during the Yuan Dynasty. In the Qing Dynasty, it was known as Dayuzhai in the 18th year of Shunzhi (1661), and in the 13th year of Yongzheng (1735), it belonged to Ami Prefecture, Bangdian Township. In the 13th year of the Republic of China (1924), Daoyuzhai was established as a sub-county of Ami Prefecture. In the 20th year of the Republic of China (1931), it became Dongping Township of Kaiyuan County. In the 28th year of the Republic of China (1939), the county was divided and changed to the fourth district of Kaiyuan County. In 1950, it became the sixth district of Kaiyuan County.
In 1953, it was changed to Pingyuan Street Township, Tixxin District. In 1958, it was transferred to Yanshan County; In the same year, it was incorporated into Wenshan County as Fengshou Commune. In 1961, it was restored to Yanshan County as Pingyuan District. In 1970, it was changed to Pingyuan Commune. In January 1984, the district was changed to town.
Administrative Divisions As of June 2020, Pingyuan Town has jurisdiction over 8 communities and 12 administrative villages, including Xinping, Fenghu, Tianxin, Daxin, Huilong, Nongken, Fuqiao, and Heqiao communities, as well as Yaofang, Labaichong, Tuoga, Chahei, Hongfu, Pucao, Yonghe, Dabaihu, Muguapu, Lianhuatang, Che Baini, and Asanlong. The town government is located in Xinping Community.
Geographical Environment Pingyuan Town is located in the western part of Yanshan County, mainly in the hinterland of Pingyuan Ba, with a slightly higher west and lower east terrain, sloping from west to east. Except for low mountains and hills in the northern edge, most areas are basin areas. The main mountain ranges include Longshu Mountain, Shiyang Mountain, and Dashan Mountain, with the highest point in Yonghe Village Committee at the junction of Qiubei County, with an altitude of 1807 meters; the lowest point is located at the junction of Hongfu Village Committee and Xiaojia District, with an altitude of 1445 meters.
Climate Pingyuan Town belongs to the subtropical monsoon climate, characterized by mild winters without severe cold, and cool summers without extreme heat. The average annual temperature is 16.4°C. The average temperature in January is 9.5°C, with extreme minimum temperature of -8.4°C (December 8, 1982); the average temperature in July is 21.7°C, with extreme maximum temperature of 33.9°C (May 13, 1966). The growing season averages 330 days annually, and the frost-free period averages 324 days. The annual average sunshine hours are 2100 hours, and the total annual radiation is 130 kcal/square centimeter. The average annual precipitation is 937.7 millimeters.
Hydrology The rivers in Pingyuan Town belong to the Pearl River and Red River basins. Fengshou Reservoir is divided into two branches, one from Xiba outlet, flowing into A Sanlongluo Cave through Che Baini in Qiubei County and out of Liulangdong. It flows into Nanpanjiang, 11.6 kilometers long and 177.3 square kilometers. The other branch is from Zhongba outlet, flowing through Tianxin, Fenghu, Xinping, and Hongfu to Jiaxi River, 4.5 kilometers in length and 421.6 square kilometers.
