Qianwei Town (前卫镇) is located in the southwest of Jiangchuan District (江川区), Yuxi City (玉溪市), Yunnan Province. It borders Xingyun Lake (星云湖) to the east, enjoying nearly one-third of the lake’s shoreline. To the west, it connects with Hongta District (红塔区), to the south with Tonghai County (通海县), and to the north with Xiongguan Township (雄关乡) and Anhua Yi Ethnic Township (安化彝族乡). The town government is based in Qianwei Village (前卫村), 12 kilometers from the downtown area of Jiangchuan.

History and Culture

Qianwei Town (前卫镇) has a long and rich history. During the Western Han Dynasty, Dinghu Palace (鼎湖宫) was built here with a special guard post, which is the origin of the town’s name, meaning “front guard.” The town was formally established during the Yongzheng reign of the Qing Dynasty. It is also the hometown of Qu Huanzhang (曲焕章), the founder of Yunnan Baiyao (云南白药), and is home to historical sites such as Taishan Academy (台山书院) and the Luoshan Shell Mound Site (螺蛳山贝丘遗址).

Since ancient times, Qianwei Town (前卫镇) has held an annual ritual on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, where thousands of people visit Qixing Mountain (七星山) behind Yejiashan Village (业家山村) to pray for blessings.
