Shuitang Town is located in the northwest of Xinqing County, Yuxi City, on the eastern foothills of the central section of the Ailao Mountains (哀牢山). It lies between longitudes 101°19′41″ and 101°34′33″ and latitudes 24°01′59″ and 24°14′55″, about 80 kilometers from the county seat. To the east, it faces Gasha River (戛洒江) and is separated by the river from Lao Factory Township (老厂乡) and Gasha Town (戛洒镇). To the south, it connects with Gasha Town, to the west it borders Zhenyuan County (镇沅县), and to the northwest, it adjoins Zhelong Township (者竜乡). The terrain is higher in the west and lower in the east, with Gasha River to the east and the Ailao Mountains to the west, forming a narrow mountain valley and semi-mountainous region.

Cultural History

Shuitang Town has a long history. During the Song Dynasty (大理国), it belonged to the Malong Division (马龙部), under the jurisdiction of Weichu Prefecture (威楚府). In the 13th year of the Yuan Dynasty (1276), it became part of Yuanjiang Road (元江路). During the early Ming Dynasty (洪武 period, 1368-1372), it was under the administration of the Yunnan Provincial Government (云南布政司). The town is named after a natural pond located near the People’s Government Office.

Shuitang Town is home to multiple ethnic groups, including the Lahu (拉祜族) and Yi (彝族) peoples. In recent years, the Lahu traditional “3·18” Lahu Ethnic Festival, which was previously held in Old Ha Village (旧哈村), has been moved to the town center, significantly boosting the local economy and social development.
