Camellias and Ancient Trees

There are three courtyards in Yufeng Monastery, all decorated with ancient trees including ginkgo, magnolia and camellia. Wherein, the famous camellia tree “Ten Thousand Camellias” grows in the northern courtyard.

According to the legend, the camellia tree was planted during the reign of Emperor Cheng Hua in Ming Dynasty (1465 – 1487), before the monastery was built.

500 years ago, two different breeds of camellia “Lion Head” and “Early Peach Blossom” were grafted into one and live as one ever since, thus creating the unparalleled camellia tree.

Only 34 centimeters in diameter and 2 meters in height, the tree is surprisingly to have a crown area of 56 square meters, able to shade the whole courtyard in red when in full blossom.

February to April is the blossom season of Lijiang, when the camellia tree blossoms merrily in a total of 20 batches, each batch with more than 1,000 flowers, reaching a number of 20,000 flowers at the end of the season, thus named the “Ten Thousand Camellias.”

History of Yufeng Temple

Yufeng Temple was built in the last years of the reign of emperor Kangxi in Qing dynasty and it is one of the famous lama temples in Lijiang. Comparing with many lamaseries in China, Jade Peak Temple is smaller and less imposing, but it is an old camellia tree that makes the temple so renowned. Grafted from single-lobe red-flower camellia and multi-lobe Shizitou camellia, for hundreds of years this tree has been growing with luxuriant foliage and blossom in season due to the careful cultivation of the lamas of the temple. Up to today it has been braided into an amazing pergola in less than 3 meters so that visitors can watch it in a close distance. From the beginning of spring to the beginning of summer, this magic camellia can blossom over 20 times, with more than 1000 flowers each time and more than 20, 000 in total every year! That’s why it is hailed as “ten-thousands-flower camellia”. According to garden experts of Yunnan Province, this camellia tree has a history of over 300 years, almost the same with the temple itself.

Layout feature of Yufeng Temple

Yufeng Temple hall is quadrangle courtyard layout, consists of a gate, the hall, and two tigers. And it is harmonious symmetrical layout. The hall is facing east, double-hipped roof. The hall is16.3 meters wide and 12.6 meters deep. Upper eaves are brackets retainer, down eaves are arc-shaped, and it has strong architectural style of the Qing dynasty. Four golden columns in indoor are carved with dragon embossments. Octagonal caisson ceiling on the top was painted with tantric Buddha, beams skirtboard was painted 20 of Buddha figures, and the painting line is concise which has Tibetan “Thangka” style.

Different from typical Tibetan blockhouses, Yufeng Monastery is a traditional Chinese courtyard house composed of a gate tower, a main hall and two wing rooms both on the left and right sides in a symmetrical layout.

Designed with a total width of 16.3 meters and a total depth of 12.6 meters, the main hall is supported on the roof by “Dougong” — a system of brackets inserted between the top of a column and a crossbeam, revealing a strong Han Buddhism architectural style in the Qing Dynasty.

Inside the hall, there is the well painted Tantric Buddha and 20 Buddha statues of Tibetan “Thangka” style, showing its identity as a lamasery.

There is a wooden plaque hung on the main hall written with four words “Cang Zhi Yin Yu”, which were inscribed by Kong Jixin, a descendant of Confucius and the magistrate of Lijiang during the reign of Emperor Qianlong in Qing Dynasty.

Thanks to the unique aesthetics of local Naxi Minority, Yufeng Monastery is endowed with a picturesque landscape dotted with pine trees all around, a small pool in the front and the majestic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain right behind, not to mention the incredible beauty when the famous camellia tree is in full blossom

Giant Camellia Tree in Yufeng Monastery, Lijiang

The best time to experience the ravishing views of Yufeng Temple is in late spring and early summer, because the famous camellia tree is in full blossomy during the period. It is said that camellia tree was planted in Emperor Chenghua’s era of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and that is to say, the tree is older than Yufeng Temple. The flowers of the camellia tree could bloom for more than 100 days, and there are altogether twenty thousand flowers bloom in 20 batches. The camellia tree is three meters (ten feet) in height and 34 centimeters (one foot) in diameter and the Lamas in the temple pleach the blanches of the camellia tree subtly into a 56 square meters (67 yards) flowery canopy. When stepping close to the tree, you find yourself plunging into an ocean of redolent and beauteous flowers. Look at the flowers carefully and see if you can find out the uniqueness of this old camellia tree: the intoxicating flowers are of two different varieties. The bigger ones are pink and nine pistillate while the smaller ones are white and single pistillate; two trees, which originally grew side by side, have now, over the years, entwined. With the irradiation of the brilliant sunglow and the contrast of the green grassland, the flowering tree looks like burning flames from beyond. It is the real ‘King of the Camellia Trees’.

Fuguo Monastery overview

This monastery used to be the largest in the Lijiang Valley but was completely destroyed. It is now overseen by an 80 year old Monk whose favorite English expression is “Nice to Meet You”. It sits high up on a hill which defeated us on bicycles months ago but which a minivan was able to negotiate. The monk warmly welcomes people into the second floor of his house with tea and incense and visitors’ registers. It seems many people found their way to his home while biking up the hill in a rain storm. Li and Silas had their photos taken with this Lama and we all received blessings.

History of Fuguo Monastery

Fuguo Monastery, the name of the Ao Min Nan Zhuo lin, meaning ” the court for Relief.” Located in Baisha Township, Yulong County, Lijiang City, it was built in the thirty-ninth year of Wanli Period(1601) in the Ming Dynasty. It was originally the home of Mu’s Family. Mu’s officer invited the Han Dynasty Mahayana Buddhism monks to practice and become the Han Buddhism Zen Temple. The name of the temple is “Relieved Forest”, and the name of the temple is “Fuguo Temple”, which was named by Emperor Zhu Youxiao in Ming Dynasty, and it is the mother temple of the five major temples in Lijiang, Karmapa, Dasi Turenboqie, and Jiacharenboqie have hosted the Buddhanism Conference here.

What to see in Fuguo Monastery

The Wufeng Pavilion, which was built in 1601, has a history of 400 years. It was originally an important building in the “Relief Forest” of the villa of the Ming Dynasty. The old name of the Fayun Pavilion is named after the five flying eaves that look like five phoenixes from different angles. Some people say that “it is not because Wufenglou is a unique and fascinating building, nor is it a delicate sculpture and gorgeous painting in the building. It is the building of the Bai, Tibetan, Naxi and Han. The features are perfectly integrated, and the whole building looks harmonious and elegant, and the momentum is majestic.”

Fuguo Monastery was destroyed in 1864. In 1882, the temple was rebuilt. Some people think that the existing Fayun Pavilion seems to be reconstructed by imitation of the Ming Dynasty. The temple was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. Only the gates of Wufenglou and Relieved Forest were preserved. In 1979, it moved to Heilongtan Park in Lijiang City. Wufenglou has the high value of art, science and history, and the people who visit the Black Dragon Pool will visit the Wufeng Building.

In 2007, the 17th Dongbao Zhongba Living Buddha, was responsible for the restoration of the Fuguo Monastery. After several years, overcoming many difficulties, the Fuguo Temple was born again in 2015. It was completed in 2015 and reconstructed the main building of the temple centered on the Wufeng Pavilion and the Relief Rorest, recreating the majestic and magnificent Monastery.

Fuguo Monastery, Lijiang

In the worship of Fuguo Temple, in addition to feeling the extraordinary momentum of the temple, and the brave heart of today’s people rebuilding the Buddha’s veins and renewing the Buddha’s life, the other is very touched which is that in recent years, dozens of children from Sichuan have been accepted. Poor children in Daocheng and surrounding areas of Lijiang are accepted there, and people set up classrooms, offer food and accommodation, teach culture, and teach Buddhist scriptures in the temples, so the sorrowful feelings of Buddhism can be reflected in the real society. At the same time, there are students from various colleges and universities who come to Fuguo Temple. The shortest time that they stayed there is three months and the long one is nearly five years.

Outside the mountain gate of Fuguo Temple, there is a tall and unique ginkgo tree. This rare ginkgo tree adds energies to the ancient temples. At this time, it is showing the most beautiful figure of the year, full of golden trees, while looking up just like that the nature has raised a big brush full of golden oil paint, to draw a picture of the most beautiful for the blue sky, which let people feel the fall, and make the spirit a shock. A gust of wind swayed, shaking a tree of gold, and laying a layer of “golden carpet” on the ground, such as the soldiers to the city, the city full of gold armor, and there is a prestige, magnificent and comfortable.

Wenfeng Temple (文峰寺) is located in southwest of Lijiang City at an elevation of 3,465 meters. The monastery, built between 1739 and 1743, is situated at the foot of Mt. Wenbi about eight kilometers from Lijiang’s Old Town. The monastery was the supreme academy of the Gagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The property is abundant with numerous varieties and colors of camellias. The structure of this temple was the largest in Lijiang prefecture until the Cultural Revolution, where many of its structure were badly destroyed. In the 1980’s, government rebuilt this temple. This place has now become a very scenic spot with many big pine trees and the beautiful camellia flowers.

From the southeast shoulder there is a good view of the final ascent. The trail zig-zags up the slope and is marked by prayer flags, some are which are visible from below. The path turns right and descends slightly before switch-backing up the steep south face. The trail tops out on the ridge between two summits. Turn left for a short hike/bushwack to the south summit, with a fine view toward the north summit. Continue along the ridge to the north summit, the true peak of Wenbi Mountain, elevation 3,430 meters. From the upper compound of Wenfeng Temple to the summit — with an elevation gain of 650 meters — takes two hours. The entire hike, including the drive from Lijiang and return, takes 5-6 hours.

Temple Introduction

In the early 1960s, Liwu Bi Temple was destroyed for being a product of feudal superstition. However, in 1989, under the advocacy of Living Buddha Rosang Yishi, the government funded its reconstruction, which was carried out by the local community and implemented by the County Tourism Bureau. The temple was completed in December 1999.

On the main gate, there is an inscription in Tibetan written by Living Buddha Rosang and translated into Chinese by the famous calligrapher Shang Wen (尚文). The inscription reads “Yuchi Qionglou” (玉池琼楼). On every Tibetan holiday or Buddhist festival, large religious activities are held here, especially the grand fasting and abstinence ceremony that begins on the second day of the sixth lunar month. Many devotees from lakeside villages and places like Yongning (永宁), Labo (拉伯), Sichuan (四川), Qiansuo (前所), and Zuosuo (左所) voluntarily participate, often reaching over a hundred participants.

During the ceremony, devotees may perform thousands or even millions of prostrations and engage in fasting and silence as part of their spiritual practice to accumulate merit. Many elderly participants continue this practice yearly until they can no longer do so physically. By partaking in such austerity practices, they pray to avoid being reborn as beings that cannot speak and lack food during the cycle of life and death.

Historically, though Liwu Bi Temple was small, its reputation was significant. It was said to manifest signs whenever disasters struck nearby villages. Incidents such as Buddha statues losing their hats or stepping down from their platforms have occurred here, which drew many visitors to the newly rebuilt temple, leading to a resurgence of worship and incense offerings. Moreover, high monks frequently practice and serve the Buddha here, offering divinations and astrological readings to locals, providing comfort to many wounded souls. As the saying goes, “A temple does not need to be large; its power lies in its spirit.”

Introduction

Shilian Temple, located in Shuhe (束河), is steeped in legend. According to local lore, there is a cave on Shilian Mountain (石莲山) that resembles the wide-open mouth of a tiger, which the villagers consider to be an ominous sign. To ward off this perceived bad luck, they built a temple at the cave’s entrance, naming it Shilian Temple.

The colorful prayer flags in front of the temple dance wildly in the wind, while plants resembling lotus flowers grow abundantly along the stone walls from the foot of the mountain to the temple’s sides, creating a magical atmosphere. Climbing up to Shilian Temple provides a breathtaking view of Shuhe Ancient Town (束河古镇), making it a great place for reflection and appreciation of the history.

During the Republican era, many people gathered here at night to read by the fire, giving rise to the term “Shilian Night Reading” (石莲夜读).

Location

Chinese Name: 石莲寺
Geographical Location: Shilian Lane, Shuhe Ancient Town, Gucheng District, Lijiang City, Yunnan Province, China (云南省丽江市古城区束河古镇石莲巷)

Historical Significance

Shilian Temple is situated on the west mountain of Songyun Village (松云村), on Shilian Mountain. The cliff walls contain natural rock caves that look like a tiger’s mouth, directly facing the village. Villagers deemed this to be unlucky, prompting the construction of Shilian Temple in the early years of the Qing Dynasty to block the “tiger’s mouth.” In the early Republican period, a private school was established here, and after the May Fourth Movement (五四运动), a formal school was founded. In the 1930s, night schools were held, and many villagers received an education here, igniting their intellectual fire. This is why it earned the nickname “Shilian Night Reading,” making it one of the eight scenic spots of Shuhe.

With its elevated and open terrain, Shilian Temple became a favorite spot for literati and poets to appreciate the view, though it was unfortunately destroyed during the Cultural Revolution (文革).

Scenic Features

As you walk to the foot of the mountain, you will be astonished by the sight of lotus-like plants growing on the cliffs, with their leaves spreading outwards like petals. Despite the rocky and barren nature of the cliff, these miraculous plants thrive here, embodying a spirit of devotion as they bloom. It is believed that Shilian Temple was named for these unique plants. The strong winds whip through the area, causing the prayer flags in front of the temple to flutter wildly, mirroring the passionate sentiments in my heart.

Regrettably, under the brilliant sunlight of June in Shuhe, my footsteps echo like those of a passerby rather than a homecoming. Shilian Temple is a perfect place for nostalgia and contemplation, with the ancient town of Shuhe laid out before me, quiet and peaceful, much like the little castle in my heart.

Environment and Architecture

Although Shilian Temple is relatively small, the environment is exceptionally tranquil. The architectural style of this temple differs from that of many Yunnan ethnic minority buildings and is more akin to structures found in inland regions. The lush greenery surrounding the temple adds to its charm, and colorful banners often adorn the temple entrance, creating an air of mystery.

While Shilian Temple may be considered an ancient structure, its wear and tear add to its unique charm. The mottled walls and ancient eaves tell tales of time, seemingly pausing at this moment, instilling a sense of calm within visitors.

This site offers a stunning view of Shuhe Ancient Town, making it a prime spot for reflection and historical appreciation. After hearing about Shilian Temple, do you feel a sense of longing to visit? For those interested, this could be a wonderful stop on your journey, and I believe you will leave with cherished memories.

How to Get There

To reach Shilian Temple in Shuhe Ancient Town, you can take a taxi or a local bus from Lijiang City (丽江). The journey takes approximately 30 minutes. If you prefer to drive, follow the signs to Shuhe Ancient Town and look for Shilian Lane.

Shilian Temple in Shuhe Old Town, Lijiang Shilian Temple in Shuhe Old Town, Lijiang-02

Chinese Name:永胜县他留大德寺
English Name: Dade Temple of Taliu Ethnic People in Yongsheng County, Lijiang

Taliu Dazhong Temple (他留大德寺) is a prominent Buddhist temple located in Yongsheng County, Yunnan Province, China. Surrounded by beautiful landscapes, this temple is a significant spiritual site that reflects the rich cultural heritage of the region. It attracts both local worshippers and tourists seeking to explore its architectural beauty and serene environment.

Talou Dade Temple was built on Yingpan Mountain, east of the second village, and is an important relic surviving from the ruins of Talou Ancient Town. According to legend, during the Ming Zhengde period (1506-1521), the Gao chieftain built Chuan Deng Temple at the Buddhist holy site of Jizu Mountain in Binchuan. At the request of the Gao chieftain, the abbot of Jizu Mountain wanted to place two bronze Buddha statues in Chuan Deng Temple, so he sent a message via a pigeon to contact the abbot of Emei Mountain in Sichuan. Upon receiving the message, the abbot of Emei Mountain had just received two bronze Buddha statues sent from Nanyue Hengshan in Hunan, and decided to transfer these statues to Chuan Deng Temple, sending two nuns to escort them.

The two nuns traveled a long distance, crossing mountains and enduring hardships, and when they arrived at the eastern part of Yingpan Mountain, night had fallen, forcing them to sleep in the deserted primitive forest. That night, a sudden earthquake struck, causing landslides and burying the sleeping nuns under the debris. After the landslide, red earth was exposed, and it later became known as Hongni Mountain.

During the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, the Gao chieftain gathered a group of nomads to Yingpan to compete with the Zhang chieftain for territory, consolidate their domain, and expand their influence. They settled down to cultivate the land, built huts as villages, expanded their territory for food, and implemented a garrison system, turning Yingpan into a fortified stronghold. These tribes that settled down and farmed were called “Talusu.”

One day, the chieftain Gao Douguang, who oversaw the construction of the fortress, went hunting in the mountains and accidentally discovered the bronze Buddha statues that had been exposed by flood erosion at the foot of Hongni Mountain. The back of the statues was engraved with the words “Nanyue Hami Buddha.” The Gao chieftain’s family had believed in Buddhism for generations and considered the discovery of the statues a heavenly opportunity. They had the statues moved into the fortress and built a temple for worship, naming it “Talou Dade Temple.”

Dade Temple was destroyed during the “Red and White Flag Turmoil” (the Du Wenxiu Uprising), but two temple buildings survived, including the main hall, which was rebuilt in the sixteenth year of the Guangxu era. During the Cultural Revolution, the bronze statues were destroyed.
