The township was established as Xiangming District in 1958, incorporated into Mengla County in 1959, and became Xiangming Yi Ethnic Township in 1988. It was once an important route of the ancient Tea Horse Road during the Qing Dynasty, with four of the renowned Six Great Tea Mountains—Yibang (倚邦), Manzhuan (蛮砖), Gedeng (革登), and Mangzhi (莽枝)—located within its borders.
