Geography

Xiaozhongdian Town (小中甸镇) is located in the southern part of Shangri-La City (香格里拉市), Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (迪庆藏族自治州), Yunnan Province. It lies between 27°20′ and 27°43′ north latitude and 99°36′ and 99°59′ east longitude. Situated in a high-altitude plateau area, it has an elevation of 3,240 meters. As the southern gateway to Shangri-La, it is 36 kilometers away from the Shangri-La county seat and is a must-pass location on the northwest route of Yunnan.

Ethnic Groups and Traditional Skills

The main ethnic group residing in Xiaozhongdian Town is the Tibetan ethnic group. In addition, there are also Han, Naxi, Yi, Bai, and other ethnic minorities living here. Traditional Tibetan skills include Tibetan weaving, Tibetan painting, and wood carving, all of which play a significant role in the local cultural heritage.

Customs and Festivals

The Tibetan residents of Xiaozhongdian Town have preserved many traditional customs and festivals, such as the Tibetan New Year, the Horse Racing Festival (on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month), the “Danba Festival,” and the “Gedong Festival.” These festivals are usually accompanied by grand song and dance performances and religious ceremonies, making them excellent opportunities to experience the local ethnic culture.

Historical Architecture

Xiaozhongdian Town boasts a wealth of historical relics, including the Mutenwang Site (木天王遗址) and the Panchen Memorial Tower (班禅纪念塔). These ancient buildings not only hold significant historical value but also serve as important windows for visitors to understand the local history and culture.

Historical Figures

With a long history, Xiaozhongdian Town has been an important node in various historical periods. For example, in the fourth year of the Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty (1406), the Yangtang Pacification Commissioner’s Office (杨汤安抚司) was established here. These historical events and figures have added a profound cultural depth to Xiaozhongdian Town.

Tourist Attractions

Xiaozhongdian Flower Sea (小中甸花海): From late May to mid-June each year, Xiaozhongdian becomes a sea of flowers, with rhododendrons, wolf poison flowers, and Gesang flowers blooming in competition. In autumn (September-October), the wolf poison flowers are in full bloom, creating a spectacular scene.
Tianbao Snow Mountain (天宝雪山): It can be reached in about a 50-minute drive from Shangri-La. There is a sacred lake at the top of the mountain, and the scenery along the way is picturesque.
Moon Lake (月亮湖): The lake features a unique concentric circle landscape formed by a ring of aquatic plants in the center.
Bi Gu Tianchi (碧沽天池): This was the filming location for the movie “The Promise.” It is about a 3-hour drive from Shangri-La.

Transportation

Road: Xiaozhongdian Town is conveniently accessible by road, with the Yunnan-Tibet Highway (G214) running through the entire area. It takes about 30 minutes to drive from the Shangri-La county seat to Xiaozhongdian Town.
Railway: There is currently no train station near Xiaozhongdian Town. However, visitors can first arrive in Shangri-La City and then transfer to a bus.
Air: The Shangri-La Deqen Shangri-La Airport (香格里拉迪庆香格里拉机场) is about 40 kilometers away from Xiaozhongdian Town and has flights connecting to cities such as Kunming and Chengdu.
Xiaozhongdian Town, with its unique natural scenery, rich ethnic culture, and convenient transportation, is a destination worth visiting.
