English Name:  Yuxi Xiyin Mosque

Location: Yuxi Xiyin Mosque(玉溪西营清真寺 )is situated in Xiyin Village, Daying Township, Yuxi City, Yunnan Province, China.

History and Background:

  • The mosque was initially constructed in the 36th year of Kangxi reign in the Qing Dynasty (1697 AD).
  • Severely damaged during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), it underwent restoration in 1979 following the relaxation of religious policies.

Structure and Size:

  • The mosque covers an area of 3.5 mu (approximately 0.6 acres).

Historical Development:

  • Initial Construction: Founded in 1697 through collective efforts of local Hui Muslims and merchants to build the prayer hall.
  • Renovation and Expansion: Reconstruction began in the 58th year of Qianlong reign (1793 AD) and completed during the Jiaqing period, including the addition of the Xuanli Tower. The main hall was rebuilt in the 14th year of Guangxu reign (1878 AD).
  • Restoration: Severely damaged during the Cultural Revolution, the mosque underwent significant repairs in 1979.

Architectural Features:

  • After restoration, Yuxi Xiyin Mosque retained its original architectural style.
  • The mosque also preserves a plaque “Promoting Religion and Building the Nation” presented by Bai Chongxi during the Republic of China era.

Community and Cooperation:

  • The mosque serves 120 Hui households, totaling 600 people.
  • There are 30 Ahongs (religious leaders), 2 Mullahs, and 13 academic leaders.
  • Noteworthy contributions include efforts in religious education, with a class for Sino-Arabic studies accommodating over 20 students. Ma Fuchang, an experienced teacher, has diligently served in this capacity for over a decade.

Cultural Significance:

  • The village commemorates March 16th annually as Martyrs’ Day for the nine residents who sacrificed their lives during the Cultural Revolution.
