The Yunnan box turtle (Cuora yunnanensis) is an extremely endangered species endemic to Yunnan Province (云南), China, particularly in the areas around Kunming (昆明) and its surroundings. Once believed to be extinct since the early 20th century, the species was rediscovered in 2004 when a living female individual was found in Kunming. Subsequent discoveries of a few more individuals followed in 2005 and 2006. In 2008, a small wild population was identified through a collaboration between Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (嘉道理农场暨植物园) and the Kunming Institute of Zoology (昆明动物研究所). However, due to habitat destruction and illegal poaching, the wild population remains critically low.

Habitat Destruction: The Yunnan box turtle primarily inhabits high-altitude mountainous regions (2000-2260 meters) including streams, lakes, and marshy wetlands. Urbanization, agricultural expansion, and industrialization have led to significant habitat degradation and loss.

Illegal Poaching and Trade: Due to its unique appearance, the Yunnan box turtle commands high prices in the pet market, fueling illegal poaching and trade.

Insufficient Public Awareness: Some individuals keep the Yunnan box turtle as a pet, often unaware of its ecological significance and conservation status.

Legal Protection: The Yunnan box turtle is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List and is included in Appendix II of CITES. In China, it is classified as a second-class protected animal.

Habitat Conservation: Relevant institutions are working to establish nature reserves to protect its habitat.

Artificial Breeding: Scientific research and artificial breeding programs are being conducted to increase the population.

Public Education: Efforts are being made to raise public awareness about the conservation of the Yunnan box turtle.
