Zhaxi Wenbu – Inheritor of Tibetan Rap Art in Deqin County, Diqing

Zhaxi Wenbu (扎西温布), male, of Tibetan ethnicity, was born in March 1954 in Yugong Village (禹功村), Yanmen Township (燕门乡), Deqin County (德钦县), Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (迪庆藏族自治州). He is a well-known local folk rap artist. In April 2007, he was officially recognized by the Yunnan Provincial Department of Culture as a representative inheritor of the third batch of provincial-level intangible cultural heritage projects.

Artistic Journey

Born into a family of folk performers, Zhaxi Wenbu’s father and grandfather were both highly skilled local folk artists proficient in a wide range of traditional folk culture, rap, and performing arts. Influenced by this family environment, he developed a deep love for traditional ethnic culture from an early age, particularly for performance arts such as “Le” (勒, melodic chanting), Guozhuang (锅庄), Xianzi (弦子), and Daozan (刀赞, a form of praise poetry or ritual chant).

Under the influence and guidance of his father, he learned and practiced diligently. By the age of 20, he had become a capable singer and dancer in the village, frequently participating in weddings, housewarming ceremonies, and other festive events.

Artistic Expertise

Zhaxi Wenbu specializes in various forms of Tibetan folk rap art, including “Le” (勒, melodic chanting), “Dabao” (达宝, Horse Dismounting Praise), and “Baixie” (百谐, literally “Daozan” or Knife Praise). In his spare time from daily labor, he would often perform Daozan for villagers and participate in group “Le” singing during celebrations.

Since Daozan is closely linked to Tibetan religious rituals, Zhaxi Wenbu frequently takes part in these ceremonial events. He has mastered the ritual elements of Daozan, including the melodies, lyrics, and dance movements, making him a central figure in local worship and religious ceremonies.

Cultural Transmission and Promotion

Zhaxi Wenbu plays a vital role in preserving local Tibetan wedding customs as a host and is also an influential folk rap artist. He actively fulfills his responsibilities as an inheritor, striving to pass on the traditional culture and skills he has acquired to the younger generation.

By mentoring apprentices, participating in cultural events, and innovating performance formats, Zhaxi Wenbu has successfully continued and expanded the tradition of Tibetan rap art. His efforts have significantly contributed to the preservation and development of this valuable intangible cultural heritage.
