Origin of the Name
Zhengqitang, originally called Zhangqi Tang, is a Han Chinese village with over 30 households. Legend has it that centuries ago, there was a pond in this area where a large creature would emit black mist on cloudy days, causing fear and suspicion of miasma. Hence, the pond was named Zhangqi Tang (Miasma Pond). In 1903, during the suppression of the Lahu uprising, the military leader Peng Kun camped at Zhangqi Tang. To avoid evil omens, he renamed it Zhengqitang (Righteous Qi Pond). Before Peng Kun’s arrival, Lahu people had lived in Zhengqitang and planted many tea trees, which have survived to this day, with the trunks being very thick. After 1903, the Lahu people moved out, and Han Chinese settlers continued tea cultivation.
