2018 China-South Asia Exposition
Brief Introduction
Yunnan is a border province in southwest China and a gateway to Southeast Asia and South Asia. As the Belt and Road Initiative progresses, Yunnan is building itself into a frontier in China’s new round of opening up, according to the expo organizer.
The fifth China-South Asia Expo opened in 12 June, 2018 in Kunming, themed “Integrating into the Belt and Road Initiative, Promoting Win-Win Cooperation.” More than 3,800 companies from 87 countries and regions are attending the week-long exposition, with over 40 percent attending enterprises from overseas. The exposition features 19 exhibition halls with around 8,500 booths covering an area of 190,000 square meters.
Featured expo halls focus on fields including advanced manufacturing, food and consumer goods, health products, and medicine as well as agricultural products. Exhibition zones will also be established specifically for Afghanistan, the country of honor, and Myanmar, the guest country. A series of events will also be held simultaneously with the expo, including the 25th China Kunming Import and Export Commodities Fair and the 13th China-South Asia Business Forum.

Background
With the approval of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, the China-South Asia Expo is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce and the People’s Government of Yunnan Province of China, and the competent commercial authorities of South Asian countries are invited to co-sponsor it.
In order to adapt to the changing situation and promote win-win cooperation, the South Asian Trade Fair has been upgraded to China-South Asia Fair with the approval of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China in October 2012. Since 2013, it has been held annually in Kunming, China.
Development
The China-South Asia Exposition originated from the South Asian Trade Exposition held for five consecutive years. After several years of cultivation and development, the trade fairs of South Asian countries have been expanding, playing an important role in promoting economic and trade exchanges between China and South Asian countries.
In 2013 and 2014, the Expo was widely joined by exhibitors from South and Southeast Asia countries. Since 2013, the China-South Asia Expo was held in Kunming, coinciding with Kunming Import and Export Fair. In 2013 and 2014, the expo was widely joined by businesses from more than 40 countries, and provinces and regions of China including Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, The foreign trade volume of the expo in the past two years hit over 38 bln USD, and the number of cooperative projects signed at the expo reached at least 900, involving 1,246 bln RMB (appr. 200 bln USD).
In 2015, the third China-South Asia Expo is expected to become a win-win platform of bilateral diplomacy, economics and trade cooperation, and culture exchange for China and other parts of the world besides South Asia and Southeast Asia countries. The 4th China-South Asia Expo have been held from June 12 to 17, 2016. The expo covered an area of 170,000 square meters and attracted 89 countries and regions from five continents. It witnessed $23.8 billion foreign investment projects signed for Yunnan and $129.7 billion projects signed with other provinces in China.
The 2017 South and Southeast Asia Commodity Expo and Investment Fair was held in Kunming, capital of Yunnan province, from June 12 to 18. The expo aims to deepen the relationship between China and South and Southeast Asia.
