Dongying Mosque in Yuxi City

Dongying Mosque (东营清真寺) is located in Dongying Village (东营村), Daying Village (大营村), Beicheng Town (北城镇), Yuxi City (玉溪市), Yunnan Province (云南省). Historical Development

Initial Construction

Dongying Mosque (东营清真寺) was likely built during the Guangxu reign (1875–1908) of the Qing Dynasty (清朝).

Renovation and Reconstruction

In 1983, the prayer hall was expanded. In 1987, the kitchen and wing rooms were newly constructed. In 1992, classrooms and dormitories for Hailefan (海里凡, Islamic students) were added. Individuals such as Ma Yunxiang (马云祥) and Ma Qihua (马启华) made significant contributions during these efforts.

Architecture and Scale

The main prayer hall of Dongying Mosque (东营清真寺) covers an area of 250 square meters. The entire mosque occupies 3.5 mu of land, with a total building area of over 1,300 square meters.

Architectural Style

Style Characteristics

The mosque features a traditional Chinese architectural style with a Xieshan (歇山) grass-eaved roof. The corners curve upwards, giving the structure a majestic and grand appearance. The rear dome hall is topped with a hexagonal pavilion-style roof, which connects seamlessly with the main hall’s roof when viewed from the side—creating a harmonious and elegant profile.

Main Structures

The front hall features three bays and 18 doors. The eaves above the doors are decorated with colorful floral patterns, making the building visually vibrant. Historically, the mosque housed two large iron sabers used for martial arts practice—one weighing 120 jin and the other 160 jin—but they were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. Today, the mosque holds a hand-copied manuscript of the Qur’an (《古兰经》).
