The lake’s breathtaking landscape features surrounding mountains, lush bamboo forests, and a remarkable sight known as the “Mountain Reflection in the Sea” (海映山奇观), where the still water reflects the cliffs, ancient temples, caves, and vibrant flowers.
Introduction
Historically referred to as Miqing Pool, Haixihai underwent a sudden transformation into a vast lake overnight, a phenomenon that sparked local legend. Surrounded by picturesque lotus blooms, the lake is often described as a mirror reflecting a beauty gazing at her reflection. This scene has captivated many poets and travelers, earning Haixihai the name “Eryuan’s First Lake” (洱源第一湖).
One of the highlights of Haixihai is the Haixi Sea Song Festival, celebrated annually on the 25th day of the 6th lunar month. During this festival, locals and visitors gather to row boats on the lake, sing love songs, and enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings. It is said that love is conveyed through song, with young men and women joyfully participating in this tradition.
To the north of Haixihai lies Guanyin Mountain (观音山), which houses the Sleeping Dragon Cave (睡龙洞), where Emperor Jianwen (建文帝) of the Ming Dynasty is said to have taken refuge. Inside, various stalactites, including one that resembles a woman’s full breasts, are found. A famous couplet inscribed at the cave entrance reads:
“The dragon rests in this heavenly cave, weary from its journey,
While the stone milk fails to quench the master’s thirst, leaving an eternal sorrow.”
The view from Sleeping Dragon Cave offers a stunning panorama of Haixihai, where the shimmering water and leaping fish create a serene and magical landscape.
