Nagu Old Town in Huize County, Qujing
Nagu Ancient Town: A Copper Trail Frozen in Time
⏱️ One-Minute Overview
Tucked in the Wumeng Mountains, 32 km northwest of Huize, Nagu is a 2,000-year-old town once pulsing with the sound of mule caravans. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, over half of China’s copper coinage began its journey from here. Today, the stone streets of Baiwu Village, ancient post roads, and merchant inns preserve the raw essence of copper-era commerce and caravan culture.

Golden Age: During the Qing era, Dongchuan Prefecture produced up to 10 million jin (5 million kg) of copper annually, with 6 million transported via Nagu to Beijing—earning it the title “First Station of the Copper Road to the Capital.”
Decline: Copper trade faded in late Qing, and Nagu became quiet again—yet preserved its Ming-Qing layout intact.
Today: Baiwu Village was named a “China Historic Cultural Village” in 2005; Nagu is a Provincial-Level Historic Town of Yunnan.
