Panmi Tuoding – Inheritor of Mosuo “Daba” Culture in Ninglang County, Lijiang

Pan Mi Tuoding (潘米拖丁) is one of the few remaining inheritors of the Mosuo Daba culture in Yong Ning Township (永宁乡), Ning Lang County (宁蒗县), Lijiang City (丽江市). Daba culture is an integral part of the traditional Mosuo culture, which has been passed down through generations. Daba, as the spiritual leaders and custodians of traditional knowledge, play a crucial role in preserving the Mosuo people’s history, myths, rituals, and customs.

The Challenges of Preservation

Pan Mi Tuoding learned the Daba rituals and traditions from his grandfather. He is one of the last practitioners of this ancient tradition in Yong Ning Township, where the number of Daba has dwindled significantly. The Daba culture, which includes oral scriptures, shamanistic rituals, and traditional medicine, is transmitted orally, making it vulnerable to loss. With the passing of older Dabas and the lack of younger generations willing to learn, the continuity of this unique cultural heritage is at risk.

Efforts to Revitalize Daba Culture

Despite the challenges, efforts are being made to preserve and revitalize Daba culture. Local cultural institutions and individuals are working to document and record Daba rituals and oral traditions through modern means such as audio and video recordings. These efforts aim to create learning materials for future generations and raise awareness about the importance of Daba culture within the Mosuo community and beyond.
Pan Mi Tuoding and other cultural custodians continue to perform traditional rituals and ceremonies, ensuring that the spiritual and cultural practices of the Mosuo people are kept alive. Their dedication is essential in maintaining the connection between the past and the present, and in passing on the invaluable knowledge and wisdom of the Daba tradition to future generations.
