Qingyuan Cave Singing Festival in Eryuan County, Dali
Introduction of The Festival
- Chinese Name: 洱源县凤羽镇清源洞歌会
- English Name: Qingyuan Cave Singing Festival in Eryuan County, Dali
- Location: Qingyuan Cave of Eryuan County.
The so-called Qingyuan Cave is a cave located near Songfa Village in Fengyu Town. It is said that the cave is filled with strange rocks, and a stream of water flows out from it year-round. The water is clear, quite cold, and tastes good; its quality is excellent.
Every year on the 13th day of the sixth lunar month, there is a traditional Qingyuan Cave Singing Festival. At this time, the summer planting has ended, and the dry land on the hillside has been planted. The Bai ethnic community in Fengyu gathers at the Qingyuan Cave Singing Festival to enjoy a carefree day filled with fun. Groups of three to five bring food and cooking utensils for a picnic at the cave entrance; they also take the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of nature, exploring the karst cave and the strange rocks, and freely singing in duets.
On the morning of the singing festival, young men and women from all directions, along with small vendors, arrive in microbuses, tractors, and some ride motorcycles or bicycles. They gather on the lawn at the cave entrance, by the pond, pitch fabric tents, set up large umbrellas, and bring out cassette players, cameras, and play the sanxian (a traditional Chinese three-stringed instrument). Amidst the melodies, various local snacks are displayed: cold bean curd powder, cold rice noodles, hot rice vermicelli, and sweetened fruits like candied fruits, walnut and peanut candies, along with various fruit drinks and handicrafts. The small eateries are filled with customers, and the aroma of tea wafts from the tea tents, creating a lively atmosphere.
In Lapin, Qisheng, and Nanjing, Bai women from the village perform the “Overlord Whip” dance on the open ground, showcasing their pursuit of a better life and their longing for a rich spiritual and cultural life. Meanwhile, young men and women sing beautiful love songs amidst the bushes, their wild voices stirring hearts and warming ears.
The Qingyuan Cave Singing Festival does not have a competition stage for singing; there is no need to feel shy about singing poorly. It is a great opportunity for young men and women to practice melodies and build their courage. In the shade of various bushes, the singing partners cannot see each other but only hear the voices; songs echo back and forth from here and there. Qingyuan Cave is a great place for leisure and vacation, making it a wonderful scenic spot in Eryuan for tourism.
