Historical Overview
The Site of Sanfozu is a significant pilgrimage site for followers of Mahayana Buddhism, particularly for the Lahu (拉祜族, Lāhù zú) and Dong (侗族, Dòng zú) ethnic groups. The main hall of the Sanfozu was constructed during the late Qing Dynasty, over 120 years ago. Originally, there were four wooden structures built for worship, with the “Sanfozu” main hall located in the center. Inside the hall, there are Buddhist statues and monks chanting.
Architecture
The entire area covers approximately 25 square meters. Behind the main hall stands a stone pagoda, 5 meters high, with a footprint of 16 square meters, built in three tiers from river stones. In front of the hall, there are four flower platforms, leading into a large courtyard of over 400 square meters, used for religious ceremonies and entertainment.
Scenic Features
The site is circular, covering an area of 2,500 square meters, surrounded by a stone wall approximately 1 to 3 meters high. Within the compound, there are 11 remnants of Buddhist temples and 11 pagodas, though many have deteriorated over time. Among these, two pagodas are relatively intact and are notable for having trees growing atop them, enhancing their visual appeal.
Cultural Significance
The site serves as a memorial for Li Tongming (李通明), a religious leader from the Lahu ethnic group, who formed alliances with the Wa people (佤族, Wǎ zú) through blood oaths. This cooperation led to the construction of the stone pagoda as a symbol of their unity.
How to Get There
To reach the Site of Sanfozu, travel approximately 2.5 kilometers from Ximeng Town to Fodian Mountain. Public transportation options may include local buses or taxis.
