Overview
The Zhangjiadong Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Garden (张家洞革命纪念园) is located in Buni Village (补乃村), Tuo Bamboo Village Committee (拖竹村委会), Laochang Town (老厂镇), Fuyuan County (富源县), Qujing (曲靖), Yunnan Province (云南省). Nestled on a steep hillside, the memorial garden faces southeast, with a natural rock overhang that can accommodate over 100 people, creating a defensible position.
Historical Significance
Before the founding of the People’s Republic of China, this site served as the command center for the First Brigade of the Eighteen Lian Mountain Guerrilla Group (十八连山游击主力团), which resisted the Kuomintang (国民党) forces. On June 25, 1949, fierce battles occurred here between the First Brigade of the Eighteen Lian Mountain Guerrilla Group and the Guizhou Security Corps (贵州保安团), as well as local reactionary armed forces. The enemy suffered 31 casualties, while three guerrilla fighters were killed, and one fighter’s mother was murdered by the enemy.
Memorial Construction
To honor the revolutionary martyrs, inherit revolutionary traditions, promote revolutionary spirit, and educate future generations, the Fuyuan County People’s Government and the local party committee actively organized and mobilized social resources to fund the construction of the Zhangjiadong Patriotism Education Base from 1991 to 2004.
At the entrance, there is a 3.9-meter tall square column monument, along with five rectangular memorial tablets inscribed by notable figures, including former Vice Governor of Yunnan Province (云南省) Bao Yongkang (保永康) and old leaders from the guerrilla period, such as Yang Lei (杨雷), Su Xiaozhu (苏小柱), and Guan Xianda (管显达). There are also four commemorative tablets, two of which honor martyrs who died in the Korean War (抗美援朝).
To protect the site, a wall measuring 6 meters high and 14 meters wide has been constructed at the entrance, featuring a crescent-shaped archway on the west side for visitors to enter.
On May 18, 2003, the memorial garden was designated as a county-level patriotism education base.
