Kunming Transportation- By Air

At present, there is only one airport in Kunming serving passengers, Kunming Changshui International Airport. Kunming changshui international airport is China’s gateway airport facing southeast Asia, South Asia and connecting Europe and Asia.

Kunming Changshui International Airport

Kunming Changshui International Airport, located in Changshui village of Guandu District, 24.5 kilometers northeast of Kunming, is a 4F class civil transport, operated and managed by Yunnan airport group co., LTD. It is one of the top 100 airports in the world, China’s 8 regional hub airports and international aviation hubs. Kunming Changshui International Airport and Ürümqi Diwopu International Airport are the two national gateway hub airports of China.

It was put into operation on June 28, 2012. It replaced the former Wujiaba international airport and becomes one of the China’s top 10 airports. Currently, the airport has more than 40 airlines, providing flights to domestic, international and regional cities, including Beijing, Chengdu, Guilin, Lhasa, Shanghai, Sanya, Xi’an, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Bangkok, etc. Passengers can easily go to the city by air.

Airport Transportation

There are several ways to get to the airport. You can take the airport express bus, airport shuttle bus, subway, city bus or taxi.

Airport Expressway

In June 2012, the toll station of Kunming changshui airport expressway was officially opened. The expressway covers a distance of 14.89 kilometers from Minshan bus park on Renmin west road to Kunming changshui international airport, with a designed speed of 100 kilometers per hour. In October 2015, the charging standard of Kunming changshui airport expressway was approved by the people’s government of Yunnan province, which was consistent with the trial stage. The whole line adopts the two-way toll method, each time collects the one-way vehicle toll. The charge standard for the whole course of first category of car is 10 yuan/car/time, and the charge standard for other types of car is calculated according to edit charge factor(计费系数).

Subway

Kunming subway line 6 is a subway line connecting the main urban area of Kunming with Kunming changshui international airport. The logo color is cyan. Kunming subway line 6, the first metro line in operation in Kunming, opened its first phase on June 28, 2012. The stops of the first phase of subway line 6 includes East Bus Station(东部汽车站), Dabanqiao(大板桥), Airport Front(机场前) and Airport Center(机场中心). And the stops for the second phase which is expected to operate by the end of 2019 are Tangzixiang(塘子巷), Tuodong Stadium(拓东体育馆), Juhua(菊华) and Juhua General Transport Hub(菊华综合枢纽站).

Airport Express Bus(空港快线)

The airport express is the airport shuttle bus connecting main urban districts of Kunming city with Kunming Changshui international airport. The “airport express” is scheduled to leave every 15 to 20 minutes, and increase the departure density at peak times, with a bus leaving every 5 to 10 minutes. The operating ticket price is 25 yuan/person.

Airport Bus(机场大巴)

There were 11 airport bus routes from urban area to Kunming airport, but 8 routes have been off-stream. The remaining 3 routes are as follows: 

Taxi

It’s the most convenient way going to downtown area from the airport. In daytime, the flag-down fare is CNY 8 for the first 3 km and CNY 1.8 per km for the rest of the journey. At night (22:00-06:00 next day), it is CNY 9.6 for the first 3 km and CNY 2.1 per km for the rest. It takes about 50 minutes from Changshui Airport to the city center area at the cost of around CNY 100.
