Longpan Town in Yulong County, Lijiang 

Longpan Township (龙蟠乡) is located in the northwestern part of Yulong Naxi Autonomous County (玉龙纳西族自治县), Lijiang City (丽江市), Yunnan Province. It lies at the foot of Yulong Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山) and along the banks of the Jinsha River (金沙江). The township is bordered by Da Ju (大具) and Bai Sha (白沙) of Yulong County to the east, connected to La Shi (拉市), Tai An (太安), Jiu He (九河), and Shi Gu (石鼓) townships to the south, and overlooks the Tiger Leaping Gorge Town (虎跳峡镇) in Shangri-La County (香格里拉县), Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (迪庆藏族自治州) across the river to the northwest. With a total area of 306.8 square kilometers, the township government is situated in Longpan (龙蟠), 64 kilometers away from the county seat, at an elevation of 1800 meters. Longpan Township comprises six village committees (龙蟠、兴文、鲁南、新尚等) and 33 villagers’ groups. The total population at the end of the year is 10,665 people, including 10,137 agricultural population and 528 non-agricultural population.

Economic Development

Longpan Township is a core area of the “Three Parallel Rivers” (三江并流). In recent years, the township has firmly established new development concepts. With the construction of the Jinsha River Green Economic Corridor as the guiding principle, it has relied on its favorable ecological environment to develop rural tourism. The township has created the San Gu Shui Scenic Area (三谷水景区) within its jurisdiction, transforming resource advantages into development advantages and truly realizing the transformation from green waters and mountains to gold and silver mountains. Longpan Township has also actively developed characteristic agriculture, such as the cultivation of traditional Chinese medicinal materials and flue-cured tobacco. In 2024, the tobacco leaf cultivation in Longpan Township entered the vigorous growth stage. The Yulong County Branch of Lijiang City Tobacco Company actively promoted the tobacco leaf cultivation insurance work to safeguard agricultural production.

Infrastructure and Social Undertakings

  • Education: Longpan Township has several primary schools and one middle school, which basically meet the educational needs of local students.
  • Healthcare: The township has a health center equipped with basic medical devices and medical staff, capable of providing basic medical services.
  • Transportation: The transportation conditions of Longpan Township have been gradually improved. The main roads within the township have been paved, and the transportation between the township government and the county seat of Yulong has become more convenient. In addition, Longpan Township has actively promoted the construction of urban and rural human settlements infrastructure. The small town infrastructure and rural power grid have been renovated. The small town sewage treatment plant has been put into use, and the communication network and postal facilities have been upgraded.

Tourism Resources

Longpan Township is rich in both natural and cultural landscapes. The Tiger Leaping Gorge Scenic Area, located in the northeast of Longpan Township, is one of the deepest canyons in China. The scenic area integrates “depth, danger, strangeness, uniqueness, and beauty” into one view. The south bank is the Yulong Snow Mountain with an elevation of 5596 meters, and the north bank is the Habo Snow Mountain with an elevation of 5396 meters. The maximum relative height difference reaches 3900 meters. In addition, Longpan Township has preserved many traditional Naxi villages and cultural relics, such as ancient Naxi residences and Dongba cultural sites, which hold high cultural value and potential for tourism development.
